I personally put a pillow case on over it because that is more comfortable to me. I think you can probably do it either way, but if you just use the allergenic pillow covers, you'll have to wash them a lot more frequently.
I just found out my son is allergic to dust mites and the dr. suggested we purchase the allergen pillow and mattress covers. Do you just use these or do you put a pillow case on over the allergen cover?
Thanks!
PS - we already wash sheets at least once a week so that should help, right?

We use the allergen pillow cover as well as the mattress cover. We put the sheets/pillowcase directly on the covers - with no problems. I wash all our sheets/allergen covers in HOT water, with Clorox 2 Free & Clear. I've been allergic to dust mites my entire life, and this is basically what my mom did for me when I was young, and I started doing it for our son as soon as he started using a pillow. I think if you use the allergen covers, and wash with hot water, you should be fine to wash once a week. Good luck!
Oh yea, I would recommend buying allergen covers that are made with a cotton synthetic. Some allergen covers have a distinct vinyl, or plastic feel, and it makes the bed noisy! If you can afford the cotton style ones, he'll never even know you added a cover to his pillow/mattress! Hope this helps!
Yes, put a pillowcase over the pillow & if you have any sort of mattress topper, I would put the mattress cover over it. I have the same on my bed. The mattress cover goes over everything except for the sheets. You should also wash your sheets & pillowcases every 1 to 2 weeks.
I sometimes feel like I should sleep in a bubble because I still wake up with itchy eyes :( I blame my apartment.. haha
You can put the pillowcases and sheets over the allergen covers.
One thing that helps me with that and acne is to change the pillow case (not the cover, just the regular pillow case) daily and make sure I wash the cover and sheets weekly.
We put a pillowcase over them.
I bought the allergen pillow covers that go over the pillow and a regular pillow case. I wash the sheets, pillow case and pillow cover on "sanitary" cycle on my HE front loader washing machine. If you have a regular washing machine, wash the items in the hottest water setting possible. This helps tremendously. Also, change your air filter more often than suggested, at least every 30 days and put an air purifier in your sons room and if possible another one in a room that is used often like the family room. If you have carpet, vacuum as often as you can. Hope this helps!
My sister and her husband use the covers underneath the mattress pad and then the pillow cover underneath the pillowcase.
Hi! My son is also allergic to dust mites. I put the pillow case over the allergen cover. But he takes off the allergen cover he hates it so we don't put it on the pillow. Good Luck
They are under your sheets and pillowcase (the allergen covers) You are supposed to wash them I think once a month but I usually do the mattress covers twice a year and the pillows once a month or every two months. My daughter also has an air purifier in her room. We have had to remove our carpeting from our house this summer because the covers were not enough.
Make sure you wash sheets in hot water once a week.
yes, pillow case over allergen pillow and mattress cover. that's what we used. out allergist also told us no matter how much we try, dust mites are everywhere.
My husband and I are allergic... we just buy pillow covers specifically for allergies, they are kinda plasticy, not cloth, and put those over our pillow, and we put a regular nice cover over top. We even take them on trips and to hotels, because it will cause sinus problems overnight.
We haven't done the mattress yet... I'd start with pillows.
Dust mite allergies? Mite feces are one of the most toxic allergens to humans and pets. Clear them up with Norwex’s Mattress Cleaner. Almost 100,000 mites can live in one square yard of carpet. Approximately 10 million dust mites live in a bed, 8 million in a mattress, and 2 million in a pillow. The primary food source of dust mites is dead skin cells from humans (which accounts for approximately 80% of the dust in a home). This enzyme based cleaner can be sprayed where dust mite populations thrive: mattresses, bedding, comforters, pillows, fluffy toys, upholstery, vehicle seats, pet beds, sofas, and anywhere organic material collects.
