Queen Bed for a 2 Year Old?

So we are going to be moving my 2 year old from her crib to a big girl bed. We already have 2 queen size beds in the house and I assumed we would just move her into one of them. My husband wants to buy her a smaller bed because he thinks a queen is too big. I wouldn't buy a queen for a 2 year old, at the same time I don't see a reason to buy another bed and get rid of one of the queens we have. Also, we can't convert the crib to a toddler bed because we will be needing the crib next year. What would you do?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. Maybe now I can convince my husband to go with the queen. It definitely fits in the room, and she doesn't have a lot of toys in her room as we are fortunate to have a playroom. We intend to get guardrails for the bed. I don't know why this is such a big issue for him, his plan is to get a full size bed anyway, so what's a few more inches.

I would just let her have the bed. I'm with you, I don't see the point in buying another bed. It might be nice for those nights when you might have to lay with her b/c of a bad dream or whatever. My son has a twin and I hate when we are laying sandwiched in his bed while I'm comforting him. I think it actually sounds nice!! :-)

Use what you have. The queen is big enough to have lots of room for her, plus room for you and/or hubby to lie down and read to her, etc.

I say use what you've got. Put her in one of the queen beds and spend the extra money on really cute bed linens.

If you already have one, why not use it?
Make sure you have waterproof mattress protector on it to protect it from accidents.
You can use guard rails on the sides just like you would a twin bed.
And there's room to snuggle while reading stories (and for keeping way too many stuffed animals in bed with her).
My son LOVED napping on our big bed (I have a picture of him sound asleep spread out as far as he can (arms and legs out) right in the middle of the bed).
I wouldn't spend money on another bed if you don't have to.

Queen bed, WHY NOT?! Seriously, she'll grow into it, and you're not wasting time/energy/money on other furniture she'll outgrow. My daughters were in toddler beds for... not even a year before I bought bunk beds, BEFORE either of them turned 2!! You're totally right... there IS no reason to buy another bed when you already have a perfectly good one. Just buy girlie sheets and you're good to go ;)

one of my friends did that, they already had the queen, so they put their daughter in it. She's never had a problem.

Use the queen bed. It will be so much more comfortable for YOU in those instances you need to lay down with her! If she feels too 'exposed' just use a lot of thin pillows and stuffed animals to make her feel snug and secure.

We got my then 3 yo a full captains bed a couple years ago but the store delivered us a queen frame AND matress. I called to have it fixed and they told us to keep it if we wanted it, so we did, and never had a problem.

No point in spending extra money for a toddler bed and then a twin bed when you have one for 'free'.

i guess i can see the draw, if you already have it - my concern would be how much room would be left? if her room is big enough for her to have all her toys and play comfortably, then i guess go for it.

I say use the queen. I wouldn't buy a twin for anyone - I always hated having one as If buying, I'd recommend a full, but if you already have a queen, why not?

We've used a queen sized bed with our son since he stopped sleeping in a crib. It actually works out great: He never fell down (without bedrails) because it is so big and if necessary (e.g. he's sick), I can comfortably sleep with our son.

If you already have it and can get rails just in case then I would go for it. I agree, why would you buy another one? Queen is big, but if you have it use it. I have a full and that seems really big to me haha. Not only are beds kinda pricey, mattresses are expensive (had to buy a new one a few weeks ago). How big is her room? If it is going to take up a lot of my daughter's room that would make a difference in my decision.

I would recommend a platform bed if you buy a smaller one because then you don't need to box spring.

@eve, oh my gosh I know. My best friend had a twin when we were growing up... it was odd trying to fit 2 12 year olds on a twin.

I would def take B's advice. I shelled out $70 for a mattress protector with a 10 year warranty. Has come in handy so many times so far.

I'd keep the bed but put it on the floor for now instead of on the frame. That way she can get in and out with no problems and if she falls she can't get hurt

My son is almost 3 and has been in a queen for nearly a year. He loves it cause he can move around as much as he wants without falling out and I do to cause i can lay down with him comfortably. He has never fallen out of it and i just went and got him some cute bedding with stripes and decorated the room with cars and stuff to make it look more like a kids room.

I got my daughter a queen sized bed at the age of two(a big pretty canopy bed), I am big on co sleeping so it was great when transitioning her, awesome for her future sleepovers, great for her and my newest addition to eventually sleep in together, it will even fit all three of my babies if need be. I assume it will also take her into her teenager-dom and possibly beyond? If she wants a new bed she can buy it herself, lol.

I think it's ok to put her in a queen bed. She can keep it forever! Or just use it until she one day moves out or when it's just time for a new matress. But if you get a nice frame or headboard for it, then she can use it for a very long time. I was 10 when my parents got me a queen bed (I was in a twin up until then) and I kept that bed until after I got married at 21 and then we wanted something a little bigger.

If we could afford it, I'd buy my son a queen bed in a heartbeat! The kid moves like crazy in his sleep, and his twin bed is a small for him. He also loves to play on his bed during the day, and more space would be great. There is no real reason to not use the queen bed. It's free. Use it!!!

Yep, my son went from crib to queen because that's what we already had, not an issue at all!

Either way either size of the bed.

And she needs to be ready for this change.

Id use the queen bed you already have. She can have a big pile of stuffed friends and not be crowded. youll have a place to go when daddy is sick, coughing, or youre mad at him,, and its a great guest bedroom for couples who may come visit, if you dont mind kicking your girl out for a couple nights. As for it taking too much space if the room is small, she can play on the bed too, so its nice to use what you have.

It is my opinion that a queen bed is WAY too big for a two year old...

I would either sell one of the queens we have or donate it and buy a twin bed for her.

ESPECIALLY if you will be needing the crib again..

we were lucky enough to have been given a crib that converts into a toddler bed, but once out of that my daughter will go straight into a full bed from my previous home (premarriage). No sense buying what you pretty much already have. I do agree with putting the mattress on the floor until she is used to a bed.

Actually, when my son was about 3 I played musical rooms and beds and he wound up in a queen. He loved it. I set it up in a corner so he had a solid wall on one full side, and just put an extra pillow between him and the open side. He never fell out. Oh, sometimes, I would go to wake him up and he would be sideways in the bed - but he was comfy. And oh so cute!

GO FOR IT! Why waste money? Your girl wont ever grow out of it! If I had the money, I would get my son a full size.

Hmmmm....

- Harder to fall off of

- Same height as any other 'size' bed (whether you put it on the floor or a frame, a longer/wider mattress is not TALLER)

- Super easy for bedtime stories/ nightmares/ sick kid watch

- Will NOT outgrow it / you won't have to replace it in 1 year and then again in 5 years (assuming the toddler bed ripoff, and a twin) & buy all new mattress/boxspring/bedding/furniture.

- Super easy for sleepovers

Why on earth would it be "too big"? I mean, she's not going to get lost. So she'll look little. Why is that a bad thing? She is little. And growing. I mean, if you don't mind dropping an extra couple thousand dollars on "extra" beds that will be outgrown, instead of using that money for preschool/ vacations/ whatever, sure. And don't mind over the next few years having to sit on the floor (toddler beds don't support adult OR older child weight) or balance on the edge of a small mattress when she's sick/ has nightmares/ wants some cuddle time.
