Is it alright to put a 9month old on whole milk if he is eating table food. Right now he is on formula but we would like to switch him onto whole milk now.Sometimes he will get a hold onto his sisters sippy cup and drink her milk and he doesn't react to it.

What can I do next?

I too, was told with both my kids, wait until 1 year because their little tummies can't digest cow's milk properly yet.

Usually, the doc's want you to wait until they are one year before using milk. That's because some kids can be allergic to milk. Their stomach won't digest it as well as formula or breast milk.

my now 10 month old has been eating only table foodsfor 1 month now and has been drinking milk (2%) for 2 months. personally i dont understand why you have to wait until the child is EXACTLY 12 months! All of my children have developed just fine...i have a 4 year old and 2 year old who started around the same as my 10 month old did and they are doing great! Like i said i dont understand the 12 month thing as long as your child is getting all of the nutrients he/she needs!! My advice personally is that it wouldn't hurt!

What you are worried about it causing long term things like diabetes, food allergies, blood sugar problems etc. The cow's milk molecules in formula are altered so the body does not completely recognize them as not being breastmilk. It is too risky to introduce it at this point as it could have long term consequences you won't know about for years to come. I would wait until 1 year to be safe.

The risk of dairy allergy is high before 1 year so I would wait. Often there is not an immediate reaction but that does not mean an allergy will not present itself in the future. Also, I agree with the mom who pointed out that your baby is getting nutrients from the formula that he needs right now.

do what you feel is right. all children are different and if you feel your child is growning and and getting what he needs out of his food. go for it. i started my boys on whole milk around 10 months and i also have cousins that have never had formula because they couldn't afford it and theirs moms gave them cows milk from the tank. their healthy and grown.....

I wouldn't do it i would ask my dr. first. My son's dr. told me to start giving him whole milk when he is 11 months, but to mix his formula with it. then when he is a year old he will be ready for whole milk. But all dr's. are different.

My son is 9 1/2 months old. For a while now he has been eating table food, veggies, mash potatoes even f-fries a couple sips of reg milk n OJ too. Don't get me wrong, its just a lil taste here n there and he has been fine. Our boy Marcus is healthy as a horse n almost as big...lol! Any who, we just recently ran out of formula and it was late and did not want to run out for formula. We thought we would give him reg milk (2%) that night n in the morning before going to the store. Well, he has since been VERY constipated. The poor baby cant go poo now. He cries and pushes but nothing. Now we had to look into a depository which on the bottle says, 2yrs n under see doctor. Here are my 2 cents, wait wait wait and save you n your baby this agony. also don't let your formula run low.

I started my twins on whole milk when they were 10 months old. They did great! I have allergies, but to my knowledge my kids aren't affected by any at all! We are very blessed! They are 13 now and are wonderful!
To tell you the truth, my husband and I have been in ministry our whole married life. When the twins were 9 1/2 months old, we couldn't afford another can of formula. Our housing and meals were provided so being out of food wasn't the issue, just formula. We had chosen not to be on wic or foodstamps seeing as how we were provided our meals. Anyway, my mom brought a huge can of our powder formula over the day we ran out, and said "I bought this a month or so ago and just thought I'd drop it by. Figured you could always use it." That lasted another 2 weeks and then we still couldn't afford formula, and we had already been discussing the switch to milk, and it seems not only time financially, but God's timing for them also. They never once spit up the milk or had any problems at all. God was in control of the timing, or we probably would have waited just becuase of a my sister and her allergy/they will die paranoia. She was just way too overboard. (She wouldn't even lick a stamp while she was pregnant because it would poison the fetus. Maybe there is proof now, but not then.)
Anyway, I would just go ahead and do it when you are ready. You know your child and can watch for changes in digestion/allergic reactions. You'll do great!

Blessings,
M.

No, your childs table food is not where they get thier nutrition! There bodies also have a hard time digesting the enzymes in milk at this point, a little here a little there is okay, but not in place of formula, formula has all of the nutrients that thier little brains and eyes need to develop properly up until the age of 1, know around 11 months you can switch slowly over to regular milk, but I would not advise it before then.

I would consult your ped. on this.
I personaly would wait to start the weaning till 11 months.
The formula has valuable vitamins and nutrients in it.

I think that there is an increased risk of iron deficiency anemia and allergies. I wouldn't suggest doing it but talk with your doctor about it and maybe supplemant elsewhere.

My doctor also told me to wait until my oldest was 1 year old. But also said I didn't have to give her whole milk I could give her 2%. So I would talk to your doctor before you do anything.

Hi Kimberly,
I have two ten month olds that i wanted to start on milk, but my pediatricion and several friends urged me to wait till they turn one. i guess their is differnt types of bacteria found in reg milk than in formula. Plus he might not be getting all his nutritional needs.

You need to remember that children don't get the same nutrition out of food as we do. At this point, he's still getting everything from his formula. I see no harm in offering a little milk with his food, but he can't be on it exclusively. Until 12 months, he needs to get the bulk of his "meals" from formula.

Both of my kids started about that age. What you'll need to do is mix it with his formula about 50/50, then gradualy increase the percentage of milk for the next few months. By the time he is a year he will be on whole milk 100%. This will be easier on his system.
