I had silicon plugs inserted yesterday. One eye seems fine - I can't even feel it any more. The other eye feels irritated and a little red on the white part of the eye under the tear duct. Is this normal discomfort that will go away in a day or two, or is this a sign this plug isn't fitting correctly??
Of course, I had this done Friday, my eye doctor is closed for the weekend, and I leave town first thing Monday morning for the holiday (smart, huh??). Just wondering if anyone else had plugs and what they felt in the first few days... Thanks!!
Thanks so much for the info! Turns out that one Saturday a month the office is open with a doctor and I was able to get in! Glad I did - she said it looked like I was getting the start of an infection, so they pulled the one plug and gave me antibiotic drops for the week. Hopefully when it clears they can re-insert without any issue!
I had plugs just like you. I remember the one eye felt fine and the other took a few days to feel normal. If it doesn't feel better within a few days, go back to the doc. If you are out of town still, ask to see a family member's doc. They may be able to check if it is still in place correctly. One of my plugs decided to come back out after a few months. You will definitely know if this is happening because it hurts pretty bad.
I have had plugs in myself and work for an eye doctor. Mine never bothered me once they were inserted. You shouldn't be having any irritation with the one eye, unless they had trouble inserting the plug. If your doctor has an emergency number, I would at least call him/her and get their suggestions before heading out of town. You really don't want to spend your holiday with any irritation. I've had those plugs put in a number of times and finally didn't get them put in again. Mine kept falling out for some reason. My dr thought that was weird because he's had his in for 7 years with no problem. So hopefully you have better luck than me. My eyes were usually red and irritated for the first few days...it's pretty normal until your eyes adjust to them. So don't be worried about it at all. If it continues to be red for longer than a week then you should call your eye doctor.
I had them put in two years ago. My Eye Dr told me by day two I shouldn't feel a thing. I felt the first day like there was a small hair in my eye or something, that plug was slowly coming out. Is there not an emergency after hours number if you call the main line at your Eye Dr.
I can say they provide me with a HUGE amount of relief now I got it all straigtened out.
They had one heck of a time getting the right sized plug to put in my duct but it panned out.
Try calling them and see if there is an after hours service.
Worst case scenario is you have to have it redone. I hope you get some relief! I feel your pain.
Hi E.! I don't have much to share that hasn't already been said. Just keep in touch with your eye doc if the one continues to feel irritated after a week or so. I also had one troublesome plug that was never comfortable from the start. I let it go and go, and they corner of that eye just got more angry and irritated over the weeks. Eventually, I could see the plug clearly working it's way out of the duct, so I grabbed a pair of tweezers and just pulled it the rest of the way out. Not smart, I know. Much later I visited another eye doc who said that many times a tear duct will just reject the plug and, over time, push it out. And just fyi, my other eye kept the plug with no problems and no discomfort (ever!). HTH!!
I had them put in 3 years ago and loved them. I could feel them and they were slightly uncomfortable, but they were never painful. After a few days they never bothered me again, but every so often I could feel the one in my left eye. They feel out aboyt 18 months after I put them in, but I would defently do it again. They were great!
I had them put in several years ago, and I can tell you it is a huge help! They felt fine right after, but later--months later--I got and infection in one and it came out. I had a new one put in and have never had a moments trouble since. I have the feeling that you will probably need to see your Dr before you leave town, or you might be miserable your entire trip. He really should have an after-hours number...or is he in the residential phone listings? This is a valid 'emergency' if your eye is bugging you. Dry eyes are bad, but this is miserable, too.
