Probably Overthinking a project....Homemade Oven Mitt/potholder

What do you like about potholders and oven mitts. My husbands sister and mom want me to make some for Christmas. I want to make sure they are useful, not like the cheapy ones we get sometimes that either have uninsulated parts, fall apart in the wash, don't fit, too short. Any pet peeves about Oven mitts you've had I should avoid in my design? Like I said....I'm probably over thinking this but I want them to be useful.

What can I do next?

The only thing I don't like about some of them is when its too thick to be able to bend my thumb to get a good grab on what I am trying to take out of the oven. Or to be able to grab a hot handle and have to clumsily try to carry it with two hands in bulky holders.

Im sure what ever/ how ever you make them they will love them!

Honestly, I've got several oven mitts, but my pair of kevlar Ove-gloves are the absolute best I have.
No slip grip, machine washable, great for cooking, arranging (burning) firewood and changing hot light bulbs - we use them all the time!

I don't know if this helps, but several years ago my MIL gave me an oven mit she'd bought, which has good padding and a silicone (I think) padded hand and fingers. She also used her fancy-shmancy computerized machine to embroider a teacup and saucer design on it, then made a matching apron for me. I LOVE both of them.

If you are going to make a potholder yourself, layer up the padding so that it doesn't need to be doubled-over to be safe. If it's an oven mitt, my only suggestion is that it not be too big or too heavily stuffed on the tips of the fingers. Some of us have small hands and those things make us clumsy!:)

Make them thick!! I hate it when you can feel the heat through the dang thing. Also, I like them bigger then the dinky square ones. I have small hands, and I still find the square ones from the store too small. Personally, I don't like the mitt kind. (The ones like a mitten, obviously.) Since my hands are very small, there is no real way to use them comfortably. I always feel like I am on the verge of dropping things. A lot of people do prefer that type, though.

I've always thought it would be cool if there were a magnet at the top of the oven mitt so I could just stick it to the oven when I'm done. I should copywright that!
I don't like mitts that are super padded everywhere but the fingertips. I've had to fold them over to get things out of the oven before. I was scared if I put the mitt on, as is, it wouldn't protect my fingers. You can still feel the heat through those!
