I just found out we are in St. Gianna Parish, but they will not have the school done for a few yrs,but we will be able to go to St. Patrick school. When I called and recieved all the details they said we should register w/ the parish ASAP (which we will be registering w/ St. Gianna ASAP), because there tends to be a waiting list, well my question is, if a space comes available will they give it to a St. Patrick Parish member over a St. Gianna member? Also, I am Catholic, my husband is not, and my son has not been Baptised Catholic because we have no one to be Godfather, only Godmother, will this be a problem? Thanks for the help!

What can I do next?

Hi G.,
I am in ICD parish and I am almost positive that when it comes time for my kiddo to go to school they will not let him in since there is such a long waiting list. Is there space available at St. Pats for him? I hope so. I am not sure how that works. I know that both ST. Pats and ICD have to take St. Gianna members since there is no school. Unfortunately, it is based on siblings, and how much money you give to the parish. (I don't give a lot, so I think I will be screwed on that front!!! (LOL). If not there are several other parishes that you can check out. Assumption on Highway K, and for a longer way out St. Joseph's in Cottleville. (My Parents as Teachers educator is in St. Gianna parish and her son is going to school in the fall. There was no room for him at ICD or St. Pats so she went to ST. Joes. They have registered with the parish that they are sending him to). Usually if the kiddo is not Baptized they can have him go through some kind of child classes like the RCIA and get Baptized on Holy Saturday. Both Godparents do not have to be Catholic. Only one has to be Catholic. You can choose whoever you would like to have as Godparents, as long as one of them is Catholic. My friend did this. She had her father as the Godfater as he is a practicing Catholic, and her sister be the Godmother who converted to Episcipalian. I hope that sets your mind at ease a little about that. I hope that I have helped you out some. If you are looking for a friendly face in the area, you can PM me and we can talk more!

We belong to St. Patrick's parish and yes, they should take your child just like a St. Patrick's child, but, they have a system of priority which puts siblings of current students first -- which makes it more dificult for first born children. Unfortunately, siblings typically fill up most of the kindergarten class, of the 50 slots for next year I think around 41 were filled with siblings. Then they look at your "time, talent and treasure" to the parish (which in your case would be to St. Gianna). So the more you are involved, volunteering etc. the better luck you will have. And yes, make sure that you are donating to the Church -- it doesn't matter how much I have been told, just donate using your envelopes so that they know you donated as they keep track of the envelopes (and give you a report at the end of the year for your taxes). I'm not sure about the not being baptised issue, but just call the school and ask. But, by all means, I would get your son baptised -- do you have two females instead -- that may be a possibility.

We have friends that were not able to get into St. Pats and they are going to go to All Saints, you might want to try there also.

Good Luck!

HI! My experience with private school is that once open enrollment opens, it is strictly a first come first serve basis. They have a private enrollment time for the members/previous enrolled families & once that date passes it is open to the public, whether you are a church member or not. Both of my sons were baptised at a United Church of Christ because that is where I attend & that was not a problem. They attend ICOM. I'll be honest I participate in things with the school (fundraising, parties, picnic etc.) but I don't attend that church, so I usually don't donate (can't support 2 churches)& that has never been an issue, although, you can tell the families who do donate extra (slightly different amount of respect) &I cuold never donate enough to make a difference:)

Dear G.,
I am not able to answer your questions about parishes, but I can answer about baptism. At the time of my son's baptism, I was not Catholic, nor was my best-friend--his God-mother. All the Catholic Church requires is that one of the God-Parents be of the Catholic Faith. My son's Father is Catholic and His brother was the God-Father. In Fact, his brother was unable to attend, therefore my mother-in-law was the Catholic witness who stood in for him. My son was Baptized by a MonSenior and all went well.
Blessings on your other searches. I will be attending RCIA in the fall, has your husband considered joining your family together in the faith as well, for the unity of the spirit??
God Speed, M. N.
