Does anyone know the legal student/teacher ratio for 4 year olds in Illinois preschools for private schools? Also, where can my friend get/call more information on this?

What can I do next?

There doesn't seem to be a reported mandate, although the general rule of thumb is 10 kids/adult.
So usually for pre-k, each room has a teacher and an assistant or helper.

If your friend is unhappy with the student/teacher ratio then pull the child out and go somewhere else. Its a private school. Why pay money if you don't think the coverage is good? Really just tell your friend to accept things as they are out move on. Starting trouble by questioning how they are doing things isn't going to end well for her.

Every licensed preschool is under the state's Office for Children (agency name varies by state), and some are also accredited by the NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children). The state's guidelines are the minimums, and the NAEYC may be the same or more strict. Have your friend call the state agency or go on their website.

If you are talking about the actual public school system ratios then you should be able to google that.

I would think a pre-school teacher could have 25 on her own or even more if she has a teachers aid. I know in Oklahoma our kids pre-K teacher had nearly 30 kids with one aid. The Pre-K teacher next door to her only had 26 and she was by herself.

If you're talking about child care then the ratio is probably 15 to 1 teacher. They can likely have 2 teachers in one room with 30 kids if they have a large enough room.

Now, if you're talking about a 3-4 year old pre-school program they'd fall under the state's child care regulations and probably would be closer to 12 per adult, then if the teacher has an aid they can double that.

So, is it a 3 turning 4 pre-school class or a 4 turning 5 pre-K class because they do fall under different laws since the pre-K class is at the school and part of the regular program. They do have to follow some guidelines. Such as all kids up to age 6 have to have nap time/rest time during the day at the facility/school. That's why they take naps in kindergarten. They have to at least give them down time because they fall under parts of the child care laws. But obviously they don't fall under all of them.

I've never seen a regular classroom where the teacher only has 20 kids or they have to hire another teacher. They have more kids than the child care workers are allowed.

In Oklahoma child care law the ratios are this.

6 weeks to age 1 the staff to infant ratio is 4 infants to 1 adult

12 year to 23 months staff to infant ratio is 1 adult to 6 toddlers

2 year old, 1 staff to 8 children

3 year old, 1 staff to 12 children

4 and 5 year old, 1 staff to 15 children.

all other children above 5 years old are 1 staff to 20 children
