Potty Training Troubles - Pittston,PA

My daughter will be three in March. We have been working on the potty training for quite some time. She will pass her water most times when I put her on it, and occasionally will have a BM. She will not ask to go. She also was a late talker, so we thought that things woud progress when she began to talk more. That's where we are right now.

I tried the training pants last Summer for several days. All I did was wash them all day and she didn't mind being wet. Today when she pulled up her pants before i could diaper her, I let her, to see what she would do. She eventually wet herself and proceeded to color!!!! I gave her a bath, which i have to watch, because she loves a bath and could associate the two.

I have the pull ups, a Potty Elmo doll, the Elmo potty video. I'm ready to try the training pants again. We also give her reward stickers and a lot of praise. Sometimes it seemsthat she will never be out of diapers, although I know that she will. She is starting pre-school end of august, so we have a lot of time. Any advice would be appreciated. She is easy going by nature.

Any advice

I was totally dreading potty training my almost 3 year old daughter. My Mom sent me an e-book she found and we followed the method and it sure worked. The idea is no diapers, no pull-ups, no training pants from day one. Go to www.3daypottytraining.com and purchase the e-book. I'll give you an overview. We chose 3 consecutive days to train. For those 3 days we did not leave the house (no walks, no errands). The first day I put her last diaper on her and told her after breakfast we were going to put on underwear. No diapers, no pull ups ever-not even at night. So I got organized (I have a 5 month old). She just wore the underwear and a t-shirt those 3 days. We put the potty in the bathroom and I showed her the treats I bought. She knew that if she went pee on the potty she would get 3 animal cookies and if she went poop she would get a chocolate chip cookie. I also had dollar spot (target) puzzles and toys for the end of each day as a reward. During these 3 days you also want plenty of fluids on hand. I always had 2 sippy cups full of apple juice and when she would finish one I would immediately give her another. This ensures she will have to pee a lot. You have your daughter follow you everywhere-the idea is to pick up on cues she gives off when she has to go. The first day was horrible, she peed on everything (the curtains, her brother's play mat, the carpet, the chair, me) After my second load of wash we were both in tears and she just up and ran to the bathroom and went pee on the potty for the first time. She has really never looked back. A couple of accidents here and there but nothing major. We take her to the bathroom before bed, after she has been asleep for about an hour or so, and again around 5:00 or 6:00 am. We eventually fazed the early pee out. Please feel free to e-mail me or call me with any questions.

Good luck!

Check out the book "Potty Train Your Child in Just One Day" by Teri Crane. It uses the concept of a Potty Party. You pick one day, and you really plan a party with theme and all. The part that REALLY seems to get the concept thru to your child is that for the first half of the day your child teaches a doll to potty. This takes some advance planning including picking up one of the dolls that drinks a bottle and pees...but it is worth the planning. Everyone that I know who has done this has had great success. They don't always take to it that day...but within a week the "decide" that they want to go potty and wear big kid underwear. My son was successful that day, but wasn't committed to the change and I let him wear diapers the next day. Two days later, he told me that he wanted to wear big boy underwear and not only did he never turn back...he only had a couple of accidents in the middle of night. Never an accident during the day. All of my friends have had similar experiences.

Hi, L.:

I would suggest waiting until the summer to start training again.

Good luck. D.

I would keep encouraging her to potty, then sit back and wait. That's the hard part. All 3 of my children were just a month-3 months over 3 years when it just seemed to come so naturally. Don't push her, and expect plenty of accidents. From my experience, they actually have to have quite a few accidents before it really clicks. Good luck!
