Potty Training Rash

My son has been potty training for one week and has developed a rash on the upper part of his bottom, where it hits the seat. He says it does not hurt, but it is very red and patchy. He is always in underwear except for sleeping in Pull-Ups, and they are usually dry. I have been using vaseline the past couple of nights but it seems to be getting worse. Any suggestions on what is causing it or what to try?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the suggestions! Maalox seemed to help the redness more than anything else, but then 24 hours after switching brands from Pull-Ups to Target's Up & Up the rash is almost totally gone!

mix cornstarch, bacitracin ointment and maalox togteher to make a pasty ointment. this is a miracle worker for diaper rashes. just spread all over rash and you should see results in a day or so. good luck. i used to work in pediatrics and this is the remedy that pediatricains give moms to use

From my experience with potty training(I have worked with kids for 19 years) it sounds like your guy may be allergic to the pull ups...I know 4 moms that have experienced the red rash.
best,

Do you use fabric softener or scented detergent? Try no fabric softener (no dryer sheets either) and only free and clear detergent on his undies and see if that helps, you may be shocked. Good luck!

I'd stop using the Vaseline first. As a petroleum product, it won't allow his skin to breathe. If you want to put something on it and you're nursing, use breastmilk. If not, I'd try calendula alternating with coconut oil. This has worked wonders on our son who has a lot of food sensitivities and breaks out in a diaper rash as a tell-tale sign.

I would try using Desitine! It works wonders on any diaper rashes, so it could help with this too!

Hi, I was wondering if you use cleaning wipes or a solution to clean the seat? If so, it could be that he is sensitive to the chemicals and that changing how you clean it will help resolve the rash.

Continue applying vaseline all day and night and also use powder at night..and lots of it.

I'd also sprinkle some powder in his undies during the day.

I have a 3 year old son and we've been using powder since birth and have never had any diaper rash.

Good luck :)

My son is still in diapers, so I don't know how relevant my advice will be. However, my son has had a similar rash. Since he had it for two weeks the doctor told me it was fungal and gave us a cream. That seemed to make everything pink and the red areas a little less red. So instead of adding moisture we switched to baby powder to dry things out. It took a while, but it helped. If it's there for two weeks I'd recommend a trip or call to the doctor.
