Pull ups are a waste, they absorb to much to fast and make it to comfortable for kids. I say diapers or underpants but pullups are just a fancy more exspensive diaper.
I know there's been a lot of questions about potty training and when to start and all, but I'm curious about how to go about it. We're not potty training any time soon, I guess I'm just looking for opinions from both sides. I've read some moms use pull-ups (I did for my oldest) and some moms just put their kids straight into underwear. Which method did/do you use, and do you think it worked well, or would you change it next time? With Baby #3 due in December, I'd like to make the transition for my soon-to-be toddler as smooth as possible. Thanks!

Something like this is so hard to answer cause they are all so different and probably none of your kids will train the same way. I think it is just really a hit or miss. Ya try this and try that until something works for that certian child. I just made sure I had the little toilet out as soon as he started to walk and sat him on it before baths and he generally went which started the association and yeah we used pull up but that never really worked for him he either went or didn't. He never pulled them up and down like underwear. but I still put him in them to try. Just now I am putting him to bed in underwear. It took him a year and a half more to not wet the bed.
i am in the process with my almost 3 yr old boy, it has been a VERY bumpy ride, but from my experience (and this is it, no other kids dealt with yet =) ) whenever i would put pull ups on him, he would completely regress and not use the potty anymore. but as long as he is only in "big boy underwear" he's been doing pretty good. it does mean a lot of messes and a lot of laundry to clean. we have had limited luck with the pull ups that feel wet on trips, but it was still too much like a diaper and really i think the convenience and lack of mess gave him no incentive to stop playing...
We have a daughter who is 2 1/2. We had been working on potty training for about 6 months or so and we'd have inconsistent success. I found that when she wore pull-ups, she'd be more likely to have an accident because she was comfortable peeing in a 'diaper-like' thing. HOWEVER, when we decided that the Pull-ups were the 'problem' and switched to undies, I was changing her bottoms and cleaning up spots on the carpet up to 3 times a day (it was not unlike having a brand new puppy) and that got old too. Now, we take "potty breaks" that she doesn't get to choose when they are or even if she wants to partake - about once every 1-2 hours, I announce, "Potty Break Time!" and we trot off to the potty and she pees 99% of the time. Just recently she's started to tell us when she has to go in between "Potty Breaks". Fortunately, I'm home with her during the day, so I have complete control over that - I'm not sure on your family's situation.
She wears a Pull-up to bed every night and that is still usually a little wet in the mornings.
So - To make a long story short, try them if you want. See if they work for your daughter and go from there. I think (as with most things) each kiddo has their own prerogative and it'll happen when it happens. :-)
Best of luck!
I went basicly straight to undies, my son did not like getting his big boy undies dirty so worked well for me
Hi J.,
Potty training can be a hard transition for any child and you will see differences between boys and girls. My daughter is 4 and I used the pull ups for her when she appeared "ready". By that I mean that she could say potty and showed interest in sitting on it and not being afraid. I would also take her in the bathroom with me when I would go to show her the "routine". After she started staying dry for long periods of time (3-4 hours) then we started going into the bathroom every hour and sitting on the potty. Whether she went or not we would celebrate the fact that she went on the potty and wash our hands. Pretty soon she started going on the potty each time so then I started to take her every 2-3 hours. Then reality set in and she wanted nothing to do with the potty or pull ups so back to diapers we went for about a month. Then she showed interst again so we went back to pull ups and within about 2 weeks she was fully trained.
With my daycare kids (who are all boys) I am using the same method. The first boy who is now 4, trained within about a month of going every 2-3 hours but he was still wetting at night and would not have a bowel movement at daycare but soon after he was about 3 1/2 he was fully trained. Now I am working with twin boys who are 3 1/2 and they are not doing as well. I was taking them every hour then every 2-3 and they were starting to wear underwear at daycare but now they are back to wetting a lot so I am going to back off for about a week and then go back to the every hour thing if they seem ready. Let your toddler decide when she is ready....I know it would be ideal to only have one in diapers, but she is very little to be starting the training. Good luck.

Girls enjoy having pretty underwear and picking them out. They dont like being dirty so much. Boys don't really care to much about being dirty or having nice clothes. Boys however do like to be big like daddy. The best advice for a boy training is to find their favorite character underwear and that is their reward if they do not go in there pants. The old fashion underwear (training underwear) that use to and sometimes still comes with the plastic underwear really is the best way to go. You don't have the mess and they still have the feeling of being wet. Don't be in a hurry to change them right away when they do go in there underwear. Either way you still have to clean it but if they have to complain to you that it feels gross or smells bad then they most likely wont do it. Make sure to cut down on sippy cups and juice. Don't give them liquids or juice that makes it too loose and make sure to keep them as regular as possible. Pay attention to the times when they do actually go so that you can have an idea of there actual schedule. Make it fun for them like a game. Don't reward with toys or candy. Reward with cartoon time or one of there favorite things to do (i.e. the park, outside play, special book, a movie etc.). Always make sure to show them how excited you are about them using the potty instead of the baby diapers and let them know that when they go in there pants it makes mom and dad sad. Boys do not like to see there mommys sad and they love it when there dads call them a big boy like them. Try going in the bathroom every 45 mins or so with the child to reinforce the idea. Always go before bed and in the morning right away and before bath time. Those are the best times to start. Make sure they go in the bathroom with dad when he is going(boys) and with mom (girls) that way they can see it is okay. Having a new baby will help the toddler in his success because he will want to be big and help and this will reinforce that he does not want to be a baby he wants to be the big helper and show him how much work it is with the baby and how stinky and gross it is.
I used the "potty training" underwear! They are thinker that underwear. That was it would not get all over the house! Other than that, I would have to say it was not very smooth for use....she was confused because her dad didn't do it that way, he used dippers and she loved it. She was not one to go thought potty training very well! Her "school" (it was day care but set up at a school environment!) helped me through this stage! It took her a VERY long time to not want to walk around with wet/dirty pants! I also had a ton of books I read to her, talking about growing up and becoming a big girl! That did help a lot too! If you can find this underwear I am talking about, I would try that! Let me know if you cant; I know where to find it hear in the cities and I could send it your way!! That was she will understand and get use to not being able to go whenever she wants/needs too! WOW that was a whole lot of bla bla bla!! LOL
GOOD LUCK HUN!
We used pull ups. I know a lot of people don't like them. But we both work full time and just don't have the time to spot clean the carpet and wash a ton of laundry. I had Bryan pick out a potty that he liked. I would go to the bathroom every 2 hours or so and have him sit down on his potty with me. I made a big stinkin deal every time he peed in it. However he still wet himself alot. My husband took care of him all of one weekend while I worked and worked over time. By Sunday night when I got home my son was traind! LOL I don't know what it was that he did but it worked. He said he just kept taking Bryan to the bathroom and reminding him to tuck it under. LOL Good luck!
With our daughter we went straight to underwear at 2. It was summer so we put her in dresses and let her play in the backyard a lot. LOL that way we did not have the messes around the house but we also put a small potty out there for her to use and try on every 1-2 hours. We started out setting a timer for her and ourselves as reminders. We were having mixed success until we bought her Kandoo wipes. She was SOOO excited to use the wipes after going potty that she would try every 30 minutes and just pee a tiny amount. We did not mind, she was going!!
Now to our son... he is a year and in half and REALLY interested in the potty. I have not decided what to do with him, because like you I am expecting another. I am personally at a loss of what to do I try and train him before the baby, hoping he will not regress, or after so that he sees diapers are for babies? With our daughter it was a few months after, but my husband was home for the summer (he is a teacher) so we could tag team. This time, I will not have that option because he is teaching all summer for a special project.
Good luck!! I wish kids came with personal care instructions that pertain only to that child... i.e. I will be difficult to potty train unless you use this method...
My daughter was showing signs like getting her own clean diaper and laying down sometimes before she "went" and we'd rush to the potty. Once she got that idea down and went in the potty on her own she would get a "Prize" like a sticker or some cheap toy to celebrate. She had a choice between getting a diaper and BIG girl undies. If she had an accident she lost the undies and got a diaper until she made it to the potty in time. It worked for her. She's pretty driven to be big like mama :)

The beauty of my body is not measured by the size of the clothes it can fit into, but by the stories that it tells. I have a belly and hips that say, "We grew a child in here," and breasts that say, "We nourished life." My hands, with bitten nails and a writer's callus, say, "We create amazing things."
