Hello All!

My son is 2.5 and has been using the potty since he was 17 months. When were are at home and he does not have pants/pull-ups on he makes it to the potty every time. However, when he has pants he seems to have more accidents, even when I've just asked him to tell me when he has to go potty.

I try not to push him, because I do not want potty training to be a fight. I just feel like when been doing this for a long time. Any suggestions would be appreciated.:) Thanks-

What can I do next?

Does your little boy have accidents when he is wearing anything? Or is it only when he is wearing underwear or pull-ups? My son had accidents whenever he had pull-ups or tight underwear on. I think they felt too much like a diaper. I started letting him wear his pants without anything underneath, and that worked. He was having more success. I was lucky enough to finally find toddler size boxers on Amazon, and he is practically 100% successful now. They are called Baby's First Boxers. I hope that this helps. Good luck! :)

My son is now almost 3.5 and our biggest hurdle was for him to be potty trained while not completely naked!

He still has occasional accidents, but is mostly doing great. I decided we had to take it in steps. First, I left him sans pants and he'd wet his underwear. We went through a LOT of underwear in a day, let me tell you! I also got advice from my pediatrician to not hurry to change him out of his wet underwear. Once it gets cold, they don't like it and start thinking that wetting their underwear isn't such a good idea. For this phase, he suggested I set aside a special day for it, block off an area of the house that has hard floors, move the potty seat to that area and make him play in that area all day until he gets it. I didn't actually try that (we never had a whole day to devote to it.)
I think what really helped my son may not work for you because of the time of year. He had swimming lessons this summer, and I put a reusable swim diaper on him. I told him that it doesn't hold in pee pee, so he needed to not go pee pee in it. I really didn't think it held in pee, because the disposables don't really. He had an hour every day that was special, that he REALLY had to remember not to go pee even though he was dressed. He only came home with pee in his swim diaper about 5 times all summer, and then after that he did so much better with underwear and pants.

I wish there were a handbook to tell you exactly what to do. I hope you get some ideas for what to try next!

Sometimes kids don't want to stop playing to go potty and seem to have selective attention at that age (at least mine does). We made a sticker chart for my daughter, and she gets a sticker for trying, and 2 stickers for going. This really seemed to work great and it might help to do something like this when he is wearing pants. We hung the chart next to the potty, and when she got a certain amount of stickers, she got a special treat like a piece of cookie. Also helped her learn to count.

My daughter was also young when she started to train - like your son. It seems it took longer - she had more accidents - usually when playing or doing something "fun". I agree positive reinforcement is the way to go. Never punish when potty training - especially since he seems to be on the young side still. M&Ms worked very well for us! Good luck
