We just moved from an apartment with all hardwood floors to a townhouse that is fully carpeted. I am already anticipating all of the accidents I will have to clean up from potty-training my 2-1/2 year old and all the spitups from my second child who will be born in a couple of months. My question is...what is the best way to clean pee/poop/spitup accidents from carpet??? Thanks in advance for any advice!

What can I do next?

Anything with enzymes in it is a good product to use for both potty accidents and spit up. Most pet carpet cleaners have enzymes. The enzymes will "eat" the proteins that cause the discoloration and odor. Often, you will see stains reappear that were already treated and seemed to be gone, that is because they are still there. But the enzymes get them out. Same goes for clothes, especially baby clothes that have been in storage. I pulled a bunch of stuff out that had yellow stains all over it that weren't there before. They were from the milk that dribbled. I soaked them for a couple days in enzyme detergent (I used Era) and then rewashed and they were fine. Now I do a soaking and wash on everything before I put it away in storage.

Having a little spot-clean machine, shop-vac, or carpet and upholstery cleaner is great. (I have a Rainbow vacuum. They're wonderful and do almost everything any vacuum can do. They're expensive, but I have some lightly used ones if you'd be interested). The Sham-Wow cloths are wonderful, too. They need to be wet (and wrung out til they're damp) to soak well, but they are amazing.

Anyway, anything that can stain a carpet needs to be pulled up as quickly and thoroughly as possible. Pour warm detergent water on the spot, suck or soak it up, then plain water to rinse and suck or soak that up.

I'd keep around a spray cleaner with enzymes in it that help break down organic messes (both color and odor)..some say they are for pet accidents, but poop is poop, right?? :-) You also may try Oxy-clean, but test the carpet for color-safeness on an inconspicuous location first.

If it makes you feel any better, I just moved from an all carpeted and I honestly don't remember there being any potty-training accidents. Maybe I was just lucky, but we started training when my son was about 2.75 yo and it was done in a week!! I hope yours goes as smoothly...since there is a baby on the way, you may want to wait...that's alot of transition for a little one!

First, I'd recommend the book Toilet Training in Less than a Day; it worked on my son when he was 27 months (two years ago). Folex is a magical carpet spot cleaner. It gets most everything. It is usually in the cleaning aisle, rather than the carpet cleaning aisle. Also, Motsenbocker makes several formulas, one of which (I think) is for biological spills (from our bodies).

I used cloth diapers with my kids, and when there were carpet messes, I'd immediately clean them up with the diapers and lay a clean cloth diaper over the area until it dried, to keep dirt out of it. (But I never had to deal with poop on carpet.) Usually, the cloth diapers were so absorbent, that that was all that was needed. When the carpet would get dirty, I'd use Resolve Carpet Cleaner, which worked like a charm.

If a baby wipe will not get it clean use Folex. I have been using it and it has even gotten old stains out of my carpet. You can find it at Lowes. It is in a white bottle with purple writing on it. Enjoy your new digs!!
