he may just not be ready. I thought I would pull my hair out trying to potty train my son. I finally had to slow down and take his lead and that worked! Then when he was really ready (regardless of age) I bribed him lol. When he would pee he got a treat (2 m&ms), when he pooped he got to pick a present out of his basket (wrapped toys from the $1 store).

One thing my husband did with my son (which I said would never work...but it did!) was toss a few Cheerios in the toliet. Then tell him when he has to go pee, to hit the Cheerios. It makes it like a game, as opposed to something you have to do.

Just a suggestion...it worked for us, it might work for you!

Good luck!

I hope this can help, I can relate a little bit I have a 3 year old daughter who wont go potty either. I have a friend that gave me this suggestion it didnt work for me I hope it works for you. It is kinda for a little boy anyways. Try putting Cheerios in the potty and telling him to see if he can hit one. He might think it is a game. Hope this helps

Hi R.. I have a 3 1/2 year old son who is fully potty trained. I think different things work better for different people, but our son is VERY strong-willed. We tried everything we could think of to potty train him. We bought cool underwear, we gave treats when he went, we made a big deal when we went to the bathroom and nothing worked. I talked to my pediatrician about it and he said "He'll go when he's ready." So we did the only sensible thing we could. We gave up. :) I was sure he'd be 12 and still in diapers, but I didn't have any other ideas. Then, about a month later, he just decided he wanted to pee-pee and poo-poo on the potty. We had one poo-poo accident after that and 2 pee-pee accidents and that was it. It's been about 2 months now. Anyway, I know it's not really advice, but your son will eventually be potty trained. Don't fret too much!

First let me tell you, you know when he is ready put two glasses one of them with water then if he pass the water to the other glass without making any mess he is ready for (this is sicological)Ok then u have to put not the pull ups the real ones and if he does not want to go le him wet but you have to be very careful and when u see he is going to pee run to the restroom and sit him so that he can see what is he doing whe the baby see what is happening he is going to like it and he is going to do it. Dont worry it will work for real!!!!!

My son made 3 yrs in Feb. 2006 - I tried getting him to go to the potty and everything possible to get this task accomplished - one day he came home from daycare and said he wanted to wear big boys underwear like one of his classmates. I told him he could not use the bathroom in his underwear that he has to go to the potty everytime. So to be honest with you when he is ready he will let you know and keep little boys underwear on hand - I think the cartoon charaters is what gets them.

Hi R.--my son is 4 and when I first potty trained him, he also wanted to sit on the toilet. It was only when he saw the other boys at daycare standing that he insisted on doing so. Fortunately, he trained very easily but was about 3 when that occurred. I think it was peer pressure, being around others that were not in diapers and standing to go potty. Not sure if that will help or not.

I have a 5-year old that is still in diapers. He has toilet phobia. He has an extreme aversion to the potty. Will your son sit on the potty? Or does he act like you're sitting him on hot coals? We have been referred to a counselor for behavior modification. On the other hand, my 6-year old didn't potty train until he was 4. But when he did, it went without a hitch. If you want more details, please email me at ____@____.com the meantime, don't despair. Some kids just wake up one morning and it all "clicks". Blessings and best of luck!

R.,
My son is 2 1/2 and I thought he would never potty train. I had been trying for 6 months with NOTHING. One day I finally just decided to let him run naked all day (it was a hot Texas July day) and I couldn't believe it....HE USED THE POTTY ALL DAY!
He wouldn't potty on the floor because he knew it was wrong and I had the potty right there in the living room with us, so he used it!
After about a week of all day naked booty, I slowly started dressing him, first a shirt.
Then the next day shirt and UNDERWEAR (no pullups or diapers because he thinks those are to potty in).
And finally shirt, UNDERWEAR, and bottoms.

He still has accidents and still needs a night time pullup for naps and bedtime.
But he usually stays dry the whole day!!

Goodluck!

have you tried the "shoot the cheerios"? making up songs is really fun! ex: to the tune of drop it like it's hot.
when you feel a tickle in your tummy and your feeling a like you have to poopey--- drop it in the pot
another trick is setting up books in the bathroom, bringing the child with the parent when they need to go and maybe a book-- koko's new potty or a video.
sometimes boys are real stubborn. be firm and don't give up. my son was 3 as well when he was potty trained. it took peer pressure at the daycare to do it. one more trick-- take away the pull up. just use big boy undies and let him pick them out. hope all these tricks work!!!

I read through all of the ideas and have to admit to trying almost all of them! Boys are just more difficult. I also tried using a colored water (ie: blue food color) so that when urine hits it the color changes to green. My son thought it was pretty cool!

Best of luck!!

Hi R....I am a mom of 3 sons. What I did with my boys was buy them underwear of their favorite character, letting them choose the new underwear. It takes some patience, but if he is ready he will do it. Your son simply may not be ready yet, it might even be worth taking a break from potty training and going back to it in a month or two. Make sure when he does it that you praise him alot. Wish I could be of more help, but I learned that potty training comes only when the child is ready, unfortunately we moms are always ready for it too soon!

Good luck....A.

R.,
I started training my son to go on the potty when he was 18 months, (I was pregnant with my 2nd and wanted him out of diapers by the time the new baby arrived). It might sound a little early but it worked. He was potty trained before he turned 2. I left him naked from the waist down and kept his little potty out in the family room where we hung out during the day. Yes, there were plenty of accidents, but as soon as I saw him starting to pee I would just put him on the potty. Eventually he got the idea that when he has to pee he should sit on the potty. The first time he got more pee in the potty then on the floor my husband and I made a huge deal, we called both grandparents and had them tell him how good he did, gave him stickers, candy, etc.
Now he is almost 3 and is potty trained at night as well!!!
Good luck with your little one, every kid is different so you never know what will work for him. I have another boy now who just turned one and am hoping that he is just as easy to train as his older brother!

I had 2 girls when along came my twin boy and girl no bigge i thought till it was time to potty train my son, i had no idea how to do this well i took alot of peoples advice about how to do it my husband worked out of town alot so my son didn't have dad around alot so i had to try what i could, i tried the cheerio thing where you put it in the potty and you get him to shoot it, the treats if he did it, the i went and sat down with him me on potty and him on his. well none of these ideas worked until i heard one and well i was not sure about it but well why not nothing else was working, i got a friend of mine to take my son out in the back yard where no one could see and he got him to pee on a tree and that is all it took, the next thing i know he was doing it on his own in the restroom! But then again ya never know when they are ready or not. Even with my girls they did it when ready it was a whole lot easier with the 2 youngest girls cuz they seen big sissy doing it.

My son turned 3 in March and was potty trained at 2. He is trained at both day and night. What I did was put him on the potty and would not let him get up until he went. For pooping, I had a general idea when it was time for him to have to poop. I would sit him on the toilet (not little potty) and sit next to him either on the edge of the tub or on the floor and start reading a book and talking about the pictures so he would forget he was there. It sometimes took about 20-30 minutes but he wasn't allowed to get up until he pooped. Then before you know it, he's pooping because they cant hold it as good when they are in sitting position. I would try this. When it comes to peeing, if he goes in his underwear, leave him wet. They dont like to be wet. Dont give him dry ones until he can pee in the toilet. The biggest mistake you can make is to put him in pull-ups. Its actually a diaper they can take off and on by themselves and its gonna confuse them. They are gonna think its alright to pee in that. Most parents think its ok because they dont mess everywhere. I rather clean up behind him than to confuse him and it takes longer. My son was about 23 months when he trained for the day and about 2 1/2 at night. He actually trained himself at night. He didn't wanna wear a pullup at night, so he would make himself wake up to pee.

Don't be discouraged. I have a 4 year old that I tried potty training at 2. I got advice from more experienced moms and I learned that boys are a little harder to potty train. I put my son in big boy underpants and in a few weeks he was using the potty. Also it helps if you make it fun. I made my son a sticker chart. He got to put a stickers on the chart everytime he did a good deed in the bathroom (using potty, flushing toilet, washing hands). At the end of the chart he got a BIG sticker and that meant he didn't need the chart anymore and he was a big boy. Of course you are going to have a little bit more laundry to do because there will be accidents, but don't get mad it's part of the learning process.

I bought those Pull-Ups cool temp with Buzz Lightyear (as a last resort) and They Worked!!! My son (who is almost 3) recognized that his "pee-pee" was cold when he wet himself and eventually he started running to the potty (it was the funniest thing) Also, I bought him "big boy underwear" and he doesn't like to wet those. And have you ever heard of putting Cheerios in the toilet as an aim? I haven't tried that but I heard it works to. Good Luck! Remember, potty training is VERY time consuming.

Have you tried rewards? Children respond to different things. I used a reward calendar. Every time he went to the bathroom, he got a star on that day. He tried to see how many stars he could get on each day. When he got five stars on a day, he would get a treat (small piece of candy). My friend used mini marshmallows for every time her child used the bathroom.

Another thing is to say, "It's time to go potty." not "Do you need to go potty." For the first few days, make it every hour on the hour. It's okay if they just sit there and nothing comes out.

I'm not quite there yet (my baby is only 7 months) but I am the oldest of 4 girls. I remember my mother having lots of fun trying to train my sisters. She always said that when that part of their body connects with that part of their brain, the potty 'training' will end! She never tried to make us get on the potty. She would just talk to us everytime she changed us, and reinforce the idea that "pee pee's" and "poo poo's" go in the potty... and eventually we all put them there! It's a stress free approach, and it works! The other thing she said was that when we did start wanting to go, she kept us in training pants, along with the plastic cloth diaper cover (old school pull ups!), until we got to the point that we were NEVER having accidents. She said that it was very important to NEVER attach any kind of negativity or any attitude of disappointment to the accidents. Act like it's no big deal, and get clean pants on.

OH, BTW, my mother has a degree in Child Psychology and she is a Family Life Councellor for the CPS in AR. :)

Good Luck!!!

Hi R.,
I don't know if this will help but let me ask does he sit on the potty or toilet? If so then try to have him sit on it for awhile like 10-15 min. When he goes praise him for it it took me awhile with my son when he was small but it helped. Also another thing and I know if might have been a bad idea I would let him know when I was going so he can get the hint like "oh ok so i let her know" I hope it works for you. Good Luck

my son just turned 3 and i just started trying to potty train him about 3months ago. what i did was start on a friday, i bought a timer and set it for every 30 minutes, every time the timer went off i made him go to the bathroom even if he said he didnt have to go. when he went i reset the timer for 30 minutes after the first day every time the timer went off he knew it was time to go to the bathroom. after a couple of days i set the timer for 45 minutes, then an hour and now he goes when he has to. the thing is you have to be consistent. and it works. good luck
