Potty Training Advice Needed from Expert Moms or Dads

My son turned 3 in May and has been going pee-pee in the toilet since April consistently but has not ever pooped in the toilet. We have tried many things like enticing him with a surprise, sitting on it and reading, etc. He is not scared of it nor is he defiant. I really feel that he doesn't get the sensation yet because he has never given any sign or words prior to pooping. I know the muscles to do this are different and it can take longer for some children. Any great advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your advice. I think you all are right - these precious ones need to do it when they are ready. I'm going to go back to my original attitude of being patient while encouraging him with chocolate! Think we allow schools and society "get to us". Appreciate all your time. God Bless.

Put him on the toilet about the time that he would normalle poop. Put him on during a poop - take him, take off the diaper carefully and put him on to finish. Put him on after he poops in his diaper, take it off carefully - as he's standing with legs apart and put him on the toilet anyway. Wipe him mostly on the toilet - and then finish if need be with him off, standing, legs apart. He will get the idea eventually.

Two things are helping us with this.
1. Bowel training-my daughter sits on the toilet for five or so minutes after every meal (the relaxation from eating often stimulates a bowel movement).

2. Going commando-my daughter has gotten a lot more aware of what sensations she's having when there's no security of diapers, pullups or even underwear.

If she goes a whole day without having a bowel movement, I'll give her a little Miralax in her water to ensure the next time she does it's still soft. Speaking from experience, there's nothing like a painful poop to set a kid back in the training process.

This was a tough one for us too. My son would make a face and usually squat and we'd rush him to the toilet but it still didn't help much. We just had to wait until he wae ready and when he was, he didn't have any more accidents in his pants. It's been several months now of going in the toilet. Everything I read about potty training basically said that you can't force the child to do it-I'm not suggesting you are. You just have to wait until THEY are ready sometimes and not do it on OUR timeclock. It's frustrating I know. It took us more than a year to get him to where we are now-everything in the toilet and an occasional accident at night (big boy undies at night). Some things we tried though-big boy undies, setting a timer and making him sit on the potty then, going naked (we have tile and stained concrete in our house and leather furniture so we didn't have to worry so much about ruining carpet or furniture), putting the poop in the toilet after he goes in his diaper or undies. Good luck and hang in there. Just let him go at his own pace and I'm sure it will happen.

I had the same problem with both of my sons. I think they are harder to train that way than girls for some reason. My doctor suggested that I just watch their schedule, since they are usually just becoming 'regular'. With my first son - it was always right after breakfast. I'd take him to the potty but he still wouldn't go, so I'd put the diaper back on him and let him take care of business - then we'd take the diaper to the bathroom and flush the poopie down saying "poopie goes in the pottie". After a while he wanted to go to the toilet - it just took time and being aware of his schedule!

Good Luck,

T.

have you tried bribery on a larger scale?, lol, the only thing that would make my daughter use the potty at 3 1/2 years old was that expensive barbie house she begged for, it worked.

Hi B.-

I believe that my son was potty trained for #1 at least 6 months or more before he was potty trained for #2. Don't be discouraged, he will eventually make the connection and figure it out. One day my son just did it and we were all set from that point forward.

In the meantime, try to keep track and see if he seems to poop around the same time each day and if so have him sit on the potty with books or small toys around that time each day. Also, when he goes in his pull up or whatever he's wearing have him go with you to dump it in the potty so he sees that this is where it belongs.

Good Luck,
K.
