Hi Moms!
I'm just looking for some good tips on potty training. My daughter is 2 1/2 yrs. old and she will sometimes sit on the potty, but has never actually gone on it! And now she sometimes doesn't want anything to do with it! We've told her she can have stickers if she goes, showed her new big girl pants, but she's not swayed at all. If anyone has any ideas how to get her started please help! Thanks!

What can I do next?

She'll do it when she's ready. I have 3 girls and they all were potty trained around age 3 1/2. I've known kids who weren't trained until just before they entered Kindergarten. It all depends on the kid.

Do not push this issue. It will become a matter of control and your child will win. You can suggest using the toilet, but if she isn't interested, try again in a few months. Go to the library and read a few books on the subject to get some perspective.

I think potty training isn't something you can push. If you do, it will make her not want to do it more, and it will give her a bad association with the potty. She has to want to do it. The average girl is 3 years old before they train (at least during the day) and the average boy is 3.5 years old. So, she is still ahead of the curve if she trains now. That said you can make the potty a fun place, and make it a big deal when you go on the potty. Then, maybe if she sees you having a good time, she'll want to try. Then, try to entertain her as long as you can with books, card games, portable dvd player (ok, that may be a bit much). Then, when she does go make a big deal out of it. Then give her the sticker or little reward. Then, let her initiate when she wants to go again. I've found with my son that one day they just want to go. It may not be as early as you would like, but it will happen. Good luck!

About 1/2 hour after she drinks a lot of liquids put her on the toilet. Entertain her long enough (can be 10-20 minutes!)and she will eventually go. Then you make a big deal of it!!! The hardest part is keeping them on the toilet long enough to go. Eventually they go as soon as they sit down. Good luck. I used an old book "Potty training in less than a day."

Dont push her...I just completed training my daughter who is 34 months old.....I tried when she was 2.5 and she wasnt ready and all I did was follow behind her and clean up messes. I asked her about once a week if she was ready to use the potty like a big girl. One day she said yes and from that day on we never used another diaper, and she only had once a day accidents for about a week. She did fantastic. She will go when shes ready.

the more you push or try to convince (bribe) her to go, she'll resist all the much harder. Keep the potty available, mention it casually every once in a while. Talk about how nice you feel in dry panties after you go to the bathroom etc. If she resists, back off for a few days. By the time she is 3 she will most likely be wanting to do it herself.
