Hello Moms,

How old was your daughter when she was potty trained? (not necessarily 100%, but at least day time potty trained)

I am proud of all of the moms that had their girls trained at birth, but I am really only looking for responses that help me feel better about my daughter taking so long to get into the habit.

Thank you very much, and happy parenting!!
L.

So What Happened?

Thanks everybody for all of the advice, etc.

The reason I am so frustrated is because my daughter showed the signs she was ready since about 17/18 months old. She would tell me when she needed a change, she was annoyed by the feel of a wet or dirty diaper, she went the same times everyday, etc, etc... All on her own...

When she was 18 months, my mom lived with us. My mom has MS, so she does everything at a slower pace, including visiting the ladies room. Well, my daughter would use her potty when grandma did. It was great...no accidents, she peed and pooed in the potty...then we moved and she had NO interest for over a year. It seemed like she was going to be happy wearing diapers forever. IMO, the fact that her little sister is still in diapers has a lot to do with Marlee wanting to stay in them - more attention. So now, diaper changing time for the little one is quick and quiet, and potty time on the potty is a BIG celebration!!

Since I wrote the initial question, she has actually worn underwear for 2 days and had some accidents, but has extreme interest...her other Grammy is here...another person to lay on the positive reinforcement!! She tells us when she has to go, and she does it all by herself - "Mommy, I need privacy." lol

So, showing no interest, then getting trained overnight - that's my plan...lol

Thanks again,
L.

My 2.5 year old daughter has peed in the potty a few times but isn't even close to trained. Since her brother wasn't trained until he was nearly 4 I'm not in a rush. It is easier if you wait until they are capable and interested.

A couple of months after her 3rd birthday. IMO, though, kids are just ready when they're ready, and it really doesn't make a difference whether they are 2 or 4. Try not to stress about it- she'll get it. =o)

Truthfully, my daughter was trained with peeing at 18 months. She changed her own diaper, went in her bedroom and did it all herself, I only knew because she put it on backwards, lol! I pulled out the potty and she used it each and every time, I was amazed!

But, pooping was another matter. She saw no reason to poop in the potty, until her grandfather had a talk with her a little after she turned 3. He told her that everybody pooped in the potty or toilet, and she was incredulous and asked, "Even you, Tata?" He said yes, and from that day forward she also went in the potty.

Hang in there : )

Grand daughter just recently at 3 1/2 figured it out and started staying dry all day, and instantly stayed dry at night too. We thought she was taking a long time, but then suddenly it worked, and she hasnt had any accidents except one in the car when they couldnt find a bathroom and she was holding it for 30 minutes or more on the freeway.

My daughter took a while. She was 3 yrs 3 months before she really was ready to learn. It only took 2 weeks after that before she never had a accident again. Now she is 3 1/2 and is totally potty trained night and day.

I've written on this before on mamapedia but will add my answer again. I had 8 kids and tried to start potty training too early with my first, he was just a little past 2 yrs. Had to start over at 2 yrs. 8 mo. and he did fine. All the others were around that age and it was very easy to do at that age. I tried to start my first daughter at 18 months old due to all the 'helpful' advice I got from others about how girls were so much easier. They are not any different in my opinion. I have also potty trained one grandson that I babysat and did him at the same age, maybe a month older. He was very ready, smart and yet said he'd NEVER use the potty. One accident the first day and no accidents after that plus he stayed dry during nap and bedtime from day one on. Not always the case but only one of my 8 had issues at night and that was a girl. So I would not rush it but whatever you do you MUST be consistent and not go back, do NOT use pull ups, be patient, clean up the accidents with calmness, use a reward of whatever the child would like ( small marshmallow, M & M, stickers on a chart, toy at the end of the training ). I have used all of the suggestions for rewards. For my grandson we got a FP potty that plays music when you go and he loved it and it had the right 'fit' for a boy and a larger child at that age. YOU must be the one to say we are going to the potty, set a timer and I set it for 15 min. at the beginning and if they go once or twice or so move it to 30 min. and you take them. Don't ask if they want to go. Usually they won't say yes. It's a job so devote a day or week to it.
If potty trained they should be able to go both in the potty and day and night. If night wetting lasts long I would see a doctor to be sure everything is okay. Some kids just don't wake up and are sound sleepers.

We were all pumped at 18 mos that she was saying "poo" right before she went and bought the potty chair. Well, she finally got put in underwear full time at about 29 months and that was at the doing of her daycare teacher. Her BFF just started with big girl underwear and our daughter was very envious, so teach thought it was time. We had 4 month old twins at the time so we had other things on our plate) She did really good and only had an accident every now and then. She is three now (since April) and still wears pullups at naps and bedtime (only has accidents if she holds too long and runs to toilet). She told me today that she likes to pee in her diaper at naps and would stop peeing in her diaper at naptimes when she changes her mind. Geez. Good luck.

My dd was almost 4. I completely blame those blasted pull ups. Never again. She knew how to potty correctly, just had no interest in it until my sister bought her a full outfit ... Down to the undies. She told her if she pureed in it, she was done shopping for her. No accidents day or night.

Both my girls actually did not start til they turned 3 years old. I had a potty chair and they got to put stickers on it for each time they went. They got a kick out of it. The potty was covered by the time we were done, it was like a peice of art. The potty went everywhere we went .......it took them about 5 months and they were done and never had night accidents. good luck.

Potty training is such a difficult thing! I do not have a girl but am struggling with my boy...and my sister's little girl was fully potty trained around 4 years old. Here are some interesting polls and stats I found on SkinnyScoop about potty training: http://www.skinnyscoop.com/search/potty+training?utm_camp...

& here is a pretty awesome potty training guide if you want to check out some tips: http://www.skinnyscoop.com/list/eden/tips-for-potty-train...

i actually lucked out with the potty training of my daughter. the babysitter did the majority of it. when she turned 2 (oct 2010) she started taking her to the potty along with the other kids. she would put her on about every hour - she started to catch on. pretty soon she would only be using one diaper a day but i would slack off on the weekends and not follow thru. finally the first of june i sent her to the sitter in panties and she has done fine every since. still have to work on the nite time but will eventually get to that point. suprisingly enough she had both the peeing and pooping down with no problem. good luck with your adventure

When my daughter was about 1 1/2 I let her be diaper free when we were home alone and i kept her potty chair out for her to play with. By 2 I would venture out of the house for short trips to the store and back home with success. I keep a potty chair in my car and we use it either before or after going places. She was completely daytime potty trained by 2 1/2 and could tell me when she had to go.
Every kid is different though, so don't worry if yours it taking a while. You've never seen a 10 year old in diapers, have you? Sometimes diapers are easier, too. Having to rush to find gross public pottys can be a big hassle.

my daughter was probably close to 3 1/2 before she was fully daytime potty trained and 4 before she was night time potty trained.

My daughter was around 2.5 (don't remember excactly, this was 40 years ago). I waited until she was clearly interested, and then just supported her when she wanted to go for it. Training took only a few days, with few accidents and no stress.

Same with my grandson, who showed readiness perhaps a few months older.

Kids who are started earlier than they are ready will usually be 'in training' for however many months it takes for them to reach the age at which they would be ready anyway. This magic age varies a lot from one child to the next, but is usually somewhere between 26 months and 4 years, often on the older end for little boys.

My daughter was about a month past her 3rd bday. And I'm convinced the only reason she did it when she did was because her grandpa(my dad) made a HUGE deal of it when she went on the potty at their house for Christmas. She was so excited at how excited he was that she was trained right then!
