Potty Training - Minneapolis, MN - Mom with 1 kid

We have been potty training my daughter since October and although we've had some success, she still chooses not to go to the toilet all the time. We use pullups during the day in daycare and just underwear when we can at home. She poops in the toilet, but doesn't seem to recognize when she has to pee. What should we do?

What can I do next?

I would get rid of the pull ups and if you daycare provider resist then get some underwear covers so there isn't a huge mess but she still knows when she wet.

I do in home daycare and I will let a child that is pooping in the toilet have a few messes, sometimes that is what it takes to get them to fulling recognize the have to pee sensation. But if it is more than one or two accidents a day I would say she isn't ready for underwear at daycare. There are a lot more distractions than at home.

My son has a similiar issue. He's not night-trained, yet. His pediatrician suggested putting underwear on under the Pull-up. Pull-ups are so good at keeping them dry that they don't mind peeing in them. Since we've been putting underwear on under the Pull-up, he's been dry 5 out of 7 mornings (and his bed linen and pajamas are not all wet!).

I should also mention, my son was poop-trained (daytime) for about 6 months before he was pee-trained.

Good luck.

Get rid of the pull ups. It's hard to do because we all hate the mess when they have an accident, but it really is necessary.

What I did was buy the training underwear from Target (they're thicker, I found them in the aisle with the cloth diapers). Because they're thicker, they prevent major 'spills' and help the child feel they are wet. My son would start to go, but then stop because he knew he was wet and run to the bathroom. After a few days of this we switched to the regular underwear.

I wish you luck! And remember, no matter how long it takes to potty train, it won't last forever (even if it feels like it!).

Talk to your daycare provider. If she is willing - quit the pull-up and just do underwear. There will be a few days of mess, but it is much better for your child. It is confusing to be in different bottoms in different places. You may have to be pretty firm with daycare. The six months of potty training was the worst time for me at our daycare. Keep up the good work and try to be as consistent as possible. It will come I promise! :)

I.,

She doesn't get that she is wet because she is wearing pull ups. They delay potty training and are best to be used only at night for children who wet the bed. If your day care insists that she wear pull ups, have her put on regular underwear first, then the pull ups or plastic training pants.

Good luck,
S.
