Hi T.,
I don't know how old your son is but my son liked (gave you the wrong name)it is "Once upon a Potty" they have a video and a book. I bought the portable potty on amazon.com.
You are right he will be ready when he's ready. I would suggest you let him take the lead.
My son decided to sit on the potty and go pee one morning and I let him run around naked for the day (at home of course ;) ). Reminded him that his potty was right there if he needed it and he went potty on it all day long.
We decided to take him out of diapers that day. We thought it would be more confusing to put him in a diaper after using the potty all day. Just a pull up at nap and night time.
I carried the portable potty with us and gave reminders throughout the next day, and he was done. I also carried an extra pair of clothes and wipes for just in case. Only 2 accidents when he was busy playing at grandpa's house and didn't want to stop what he was doing.
My son was over 3 1/2 and I'm glad I let him take the lead because it was sooooo much easier than I thought it would be. He'll be four the end of July.
It's my feeling that you can't teach your child to recognize body signals for when it's time to pee or poo. That is something he needed to learn on his own and once he did he was ready. We gave him LOTS of praise, and we chose not to use any types of bribes or rewards (such as a treat or sticker) to use the potty. We thought that might backfire on us and give him power that we didn't want him to have!;) For us it was more about him being ready than us wanting him to be ready!
I know that some parents have their kids in daycare and there might be a need to do aggressive potty training because of that...you do what you have to do! But because I'm home with him we decided to take a more relaxed approach and it worked for us. Thankfully!! :) I hope this helps and wish you lot's of luck!!
