My grandson is 27 mo and potty training. He will only pee a teaspoon amt on potty. Even if it has been eight hours since he urinated. He seems to understand and want to stay dry but not how to let it go. Should we keep trying??

What can I do next?

Maybe have him sit on the potty seat when he needs to go, and give him a book or something to look at while he sits there. Maybe once he relaxes a bit, and the pressure is off, he will be able to go.

My parents used to have to pour a little bit of water between my sister's legs to help her get going... Not sure if it would work for a little boy, but maybe.

You might also try just running water, or putting a little water in the potty seat so when he goes it makes a different sound. It sounds like maybe he is starting to go, but stopping for some reason. Maybe the sound of his urine hitting the bottom of the seat surprises him.

Keep trying if you have lots of patience but not if you are going to get angry or frustrated with him. He just may not have the control over his body as much as he would like to please you.

I would just stop for now, let his mind and body synchronize a bit more, then start again in a couple months. He is pretty young for a boy to start training.

With my oldest, we put the potty chair in the living room and let him watch tv. It took a little while for him to make the connection, but once he got it, he got it.

He potty trained when he was almost 4, and my youngest when he was about 3 1/2. So if this seems like a source of frustration, it really is ok to back off and try again later.

He is working out the control aspect of it. My oldest did this. Just give him time.

Is he producing more urine outside of the potty? In his pull up or diaper? If not then he's seriously dehydrated. That's not enough urine in an 8 hour time period.

If he is getting 4-8 ounces of water or other water like fluids he should be urinating every couple of hours.

If he is not drinking enough you need to make sure he starts getting a lot more. He could get seriously sick if he gets dehydrated too much.

Is he peeing elsewhere, pullups, diapers or underwear? If he's not he sounds seriously dehydrated, and needs his fluids upped a lot, mostly water. A good indication he's dehydrated is if his urine is dark rather than clear or pale yellow, meaning it's concentrated. If he is peeing elsewhere keep up the training, understanding and willingness are half of what's needed, his body will get it soon, accidents are normal. Run the faucet while he's going, it seems to help "let it go," read him a book or sing songs to keep him on the potty. He might go more if he stays on the potty longer.
