Potty Training - South Beloit,IL

My son will be 3 at the end of April. I was wondering if you great moms had positive or negative things to say about rubber pants for potty training.
He will sit on the potty chair at school and at home but rarely goes. He tells us when he pees or poops as he's doing it. We have underwear that he will wear over his pull-ups.
Every other transition he has done very well with and I would like to go cold turkey on this one as well.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

So What Happened?

Kiss Your Brains, Mamas! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! We decided to go cold turkey and just do it. The first 2 or 3 days were really hard and then he realized that it was okay. He is only wearing pullups at nap and bedtime. We didn't do the rubberpants because I think they would have been uncomfortable. He went all day Sunday with no accidents. I figure we can work on the pooping part when he is ready. I am so proud of him!
Thanks for all of your wonderful advice!

don't buy the ones that are padded, just get the thin plastic pants that go over underwear. They work WONDERFULLY!! and will save your furniture and rugs and house and carseat and every thing. I have all the potty training kids use them at my daycare.

Expect the first week to be accidents and keep in those pants still, after that first week you will basically have a potty trained kid. Just do it!!

Hi,
My son hated the rubber (plastic) underwear. He complained that they were too tight (elastic) and they were too hot for him. They did not breathe and he got rashes from them. I found the thick traininng underwear worked better for us. Good luck!

I am an older mom and have always used the rubber pants. They are wet, smelly and messy, but you don't have to deal with it for very long. If you do, they are not ready to potty train.

I get the training pants which are made out of cotton and are easy to pull up and down and then put the rubber pants over it. This works much better during warmer weather or with just elastic pants. My boys always wait until the last minute to go (STILL!).

They need to feel wet and dirty to get the full picture and pullups pull away the wetness, so I never had success with that. THe naked method never worked for me either.

Good luck!

I agree about the rubberpants. I did not find them effective (we used them for nap time. We ended up just going cold turkey. I used a Dr. Phil method, but more taylored to my daughter. It worked well. The first day 6 accidents, next day 4, then 2 then 1 to none. Positive reinforcement is key. Try to make it low stress and not make the accidents a big deal. We had "Cinderella" (had a friend pose) call her to congratulate her on being a big girl and had a "big girl" party after dinner one night to celebrate. (Got a cake and hats, ect..) She loved it!

I always hated the rubber pants because they seemed to make a huge mess and personally we just went cold turkey on the diapers...I just let him go commando around the house for a week or two while he learned...but I am lucky enough to be able to stay home with him all day and did not have to worry about daycare or school...one suggestion that I heard when I was looking for ideas was letting them wear the underpants UNDER the pullups so that they still feel the wetness (even the 'cool feel' pullups proved useless to us) but they don't make a mess...I thought that was a great idea and might work for you...less messy then the rubber pants but they still feel the wetness...good luck and I hope you find something that works for you :)

hello-
I have one trained and working on daughter #2.
I tried several methods with my first. Initially we started with commando in the spring/summer outside just to get used to the feeling - and no rug to clean. Potty nearby.

Then we went to cloth training underwear with the rubber pants over.
Thankfully she tended to do #2 willingly on the potty.

I didn't care for the rubber pants that had the cotton liner attached- seemed messier.

As for as the smell (on underwear and other accidents and leaks) I found a wonderful product - Kids 'n Pets - it has enzymes that "eat" and eliminate the source. Terrific stuff - a must have - works on a lot of other thing too!!!

Does he go to certain places when he is in process of #2?
-under a table or behind a curtain?

Boy is this a fun time!!!
Nothing like being knee deep in bodily functions!

The only thing more fun would be training octuplets.
.... I just felt a shutter through my body.

Every kid is different. All that I really learned from training my first child was patience. Work at it diligently but throw major expectations out the window. My daughter is very intelligent but potty training took longer than I expected- She just didn't want to be bothered with the potty when there were so many things to do. Even now she often waits to the last second.
Good Luck , patience and lots of humor, L.
