Potty Training - Newton, MS

I have a 21 month old girl that was 2 months premature. I'm trying to potty train now, but she will only sit on the potty and look at me. She will gladly get the pull-up when I ask for one, but will not let me know until I say let's go potty. Any advice on how to finally get her to go pee-pee in the potty?

What can I do next?

I have used "Potty Training in less than 24 hours" by Foxx and Azrin on six of my kids. While it took more than 24 hours, it took about 3 days. Once you've decided to train, there are 3 criteria to determine if your child is ready. She might not be ready. I think Pull-ups just confuse them. What is special about this book is that it tells you to reward for dry pants. Instead of just praising when they go on the potty you praise for dry pants. Once you've decided to train, there are 3 criteria to determine if your child is ready. You check their pants every ten minutes and give them an m&m or skittle for staying dry. I don't have time to go in detail but it works. Also you "practice" when they make a mistake. You say, "You're playing legos and you feel pee-pee coming, what are you going to do?" and you both run to the potty and practice going real quick. You do this from different spots all over the house. You are supposed to practice about 10 times from all different spots. Don't be negative just have her help you clean up messes and practice. The book really had some ingenious ideas...all positive.

I read some great advice in The Happiest Toddler on the Block by Harvey Karp. Too much to go into now, but basically, have reading time on the toilet and rewards just for sitting on the toilet...get the book for more. Good stuff.

With my son, I set a timer and took him every 30 minutes for about three days, and the i kinda tapered off to 45, then an hour. he eventually started going on his own. We've backtracked a bit, but he's doing pretty good. pull-ups make them feel like they have a diaper on, so I would use regular underwear as much as possible (i only put pull-ups on at night and when we go places for a long time). It's annoying to clean up so much pee and poop, but she'll feel it more if she's wearing cloth underwear. character underwear helps, too, b/c he feels bad when he poops on buzz lightyear.

Good luck!!

I think 21 months is too young to be potty training. She's probably not ready. There is no reason to push her. I think 2 1/2 or so, is a much better age to start.

A.,

My twins were 3 months premature. When they were 2 I tried to start potty train. There were not ready. I waited a year. A month before they turned 3 I tried to potty train them. My daughter put on big pants. She did great we only used the pull-up at nap and night. One week a later she did not want the pull-up. She did not need them. Your little girl just might not be ready to be potty train. Just watch her and she will gave you the sign when she is ready.
