I have a little boy who is 32 months old and has been daytime potty trained for near 4 months now. One day he just decided to goand never went back! We even only had a handfull of accidents in the first few months. Suddenly the past week he has start waiting until he begins to wet his pants then goes pee and now 3 times this week he has deliberatly pooped in his pants?!?!?!

Any ideas or thoughts on what could cause a child to go backwards like this?

What can I do next?

My 3 1/2 y/o daughter has been the same way. She's been potty trained since January, 2011 and she goes through these bouts of accidents. Not sure why this is happening, but I do know the bigger deal I make of it, the worse it is. So.... at least in my case, I just treat it like no big deal, we clean up, and life goes on. She gets back on track on her own within the day. I've heard this is really common. I would NEVER back track to pull-ups or diapers, just have him help clean things up, and be low key about it. I would also give more reminders through the day, sometimes they get so caught up in playing, they just forget or try to hold too long. Good luck, hang in there!

Anything out of the ordinary going on at home? Seems like I've heard and read that kids can revert if they are in a stressful situation of any kind. Sometimes something really small can undo things. It certainly happened with my perfectly potty-trained three year old when I brought her twin sisters home. It was as though we had to start from square one with training that had taken a year to complete. It didn't last long, though, and hopefully your situation won't either. Be patient, Mama, and give him lots of love and encouragement.

Totally normal for kids to regress every now and then.My almost 4 year old is just going through a phase right now, she's been potty trained for almost two years!
It usually coincides with a growth or development spurt. In case of a growth spurt it can actually be physical, kids don't grow in a proportionate way and sometimes they have to relearn a certain skill like coordinating pottying.
For newly potty trained kids it's also a matter of becoming more confindent, many think that they can hold it longer and they don't want to interrupt what they are doing...my daughter falls into that category. She has just really gotten into imaginative play and will simply ignore the signals her body sends her, if it is inconvenient at the time. For us it helps to give her regular potty reminders...

I agree with Diane G. Unless your child has had a big life change (moving, parents having issues, new baby), just go on.

I'm not sure what you mean by "deliberately" pooping, but let's assume they are accidents. Just be sure to have him help clean up after himself and encourage the heck out of him when he goes in the potty.
