I potty trained my little guy this past week, he did awesome! Only 3 accidents the whole week, the problem started 2 days ago. The first 3 days of training went great with both #1 and #2, however, now he is holding his poop in and complaining that his bum hurts. We finally got him to poop on the potty yesterday but today he is doing the same thing. He wants to sit on the potty but only for a second not enough time to let the poop come out.. Any suggestions?!
Thanks

What can I do next?

I know it is silly but when my son would go poop he would sit on the potty chair and I would go sit on the big potty next to him and cheer for him to push it all the way out and even act out grunting and pushing with him and would make it sort of a game. Also would celebrate the size of his poops wow look at that big one woo hoo good job pushing that one out (gross but he was excited about it) We also got special puffy foil dirtbike stikers for poops in the potty and bigger treats/prises for collecting so many poop stickers. LOL he's only been potty trained for about 4 months now and he will still sing the cheers by himself in the bathroom LOL kinda cute until he gets caught doing it when he goes to college.

First, add lots of fiber to his diet. Fresh fruits and veggies (especially prunes and green leafies) and whole grains are good, natural sources. Not only will they loosen up the poop so it comes faster and easier, but they're great for overall health, and a good dietary habit for your whole family.

Second, have a small selection of favorite books in a little book cubby right there in the bathroom. Sit with him and read one or two while he's sitting on the potty. It will help him sit there a bit longer and give him something to think about while he is waiting. This is really what made the difference for my daughter. She was afraid to poop in the potty, but after a couple of times (where she was able to sit still and wait because of the books) it was less scary and she started going more on her own.

Just keep taking him! My son did this too. We'd take him in sit him on the potty and he'd say he was done. Off the potty, wash his hands back to play..."I have to go potty again!" not even a minute later. This happened for a week or two and boy did it get old. Probably about the 7th or 8th time he'd actually go. We made a HUGE deal about it when he'd finally go and he was proud and happy. One day we both asked each other if he had done it and he hadn't. I think it's just part of learning to use the potty. Good Luck and don't worry, sounds like he's doing great! When they're ready they're ready and isn't it wonderful?! Do prepare yourself for a relapse though. I didn't think my little boy would, I thought he had it in the bag and just last week he started having accidents. They get used to it and have so much fun playing and think that the fun won't be there when they get back and wait too long. Both my son and nephew who have been potty trained for well over 6 months are going through this now. So once he is a champ at it going by himself every time, start asking him here and there if its been a long time since he last went. :) Once again good luck!

If you have the time, and know about when his bowel movements are in the day, then go with him to the potty when it's time to poop and read him a story to get him to stay on long enough. It's not the ideal situation, but it's better than them getting constipated and afraid to poop on the potty.

at the suggestion of my pediatrician, we mixed alittle miralax with my little girls juice, not enough to give her diareah (sp?) but enough to make things hard for her to hold it in. worked like a charm. it didn't hurt anymore and she stopped holdint it in. Good Luck!

Books! We read books on the potty to encourage my son to sit long enough to get it all out. HOpe this helps!

Hi J.,
Sounds like he's constipated. Up the fruit and give him 6 ounces of prune juice. That'll loosen things up for him!

For our little guy (who was *always* on the go) we had to take the time to sit with him in the bathroom & read potty books. It wasn't the most fun thing in the world, but he would sit still for a story! His fave was "How to Potty Train your Monster" that we bought at Target.
Good luck!
