Potty-Training Relapse!

My daughter is 27 months old. She's been working on potty training for the past several months and has been wearing regular panties during the day with very few accidents. Since we put her in panties a few months ago, she has not pooped in her panties at all, and every now and then she'll pee but many times she'll catch herself and finish in the potty. Now all of the sudden in the past few days she's having accidents left and right, even pooping in her underwear and then taking them off and not telling anyone. I feel like at this point I shouldn't be rewarding her every time she goes potty, because it should be expected. I also don't want to punish her for going in her underwear. Any suggestions?

Also, when she was going to the potty very regularly, she developed a habit of asking to go to the bathroom over and over again when we were in stores. Yet, we go in, and she doesn't go. I started taking her the first time she asked and then after that telling her she needed to wait till we got home. Should I be doing this?

What can I do next?

I would switch back to diapers/pull-ups so it's not such a catastrophe when she has an accident, and work with rewards still. It's frustrating when you've made progress, but some children are just getting started with potty training at her age, so she's still just getting the hang of it. It may have been exciting to her at first, so she put a lot of energy into it, but perhaps now, it's not such a thrill to her! Just give her some time, and work a potty routine into her schedule (where you take her to the potty every couple of hours, even if she didn't say she needed to go).

This kind of regression is extremely common. So is the wanting to visit every potty within 100 miles. Used to drive me nuts, but I always took my daughter anyway when she asked. She's 4 now, and sometimes she'll still hold it when we leave the house so she can use the potty at some new location.

Keep up with the encouragement, but not the rewards. Bore her--every time she does it, have her help you clean up (just make her flush or whatever) and talk to her about not doing it. If she keeps it up, every time she poops in her underpants put her in a pull-up. You can also do what some of my friends have done and explain that she can't go to some place she wants to go (preschool, wherever) unless she is potty trained because she can't wear diapers there.

You might want to check with your pediatrician about her possibly having a urinary-tract infection. My daughter had one or two when she was a new potty trainer that kind of got her off track.
As for the store bathrooms- all three of my potty-trained kids have been fascinated with checking out every public restroom. I would take them into the restroom as soon as we got to a store and let them try if they wanted to. Then get my shopping done. It was much easier to let them get their curiosity out of the way before I had a cart full of items. If they wanted to go back later I would havve them wait until they got home- they get the idea fairly quickly.

At only 2 yrs old she will prob have several stages of relapses. What is going on in your house, have there been any changes? Changes can trigger a relapse. And it prob isnt a bad idea to continue the rewards, giving her a sticker if she can keep her underpants dry or something like that. no don't punish her for going in her pants. Make her help clean up the mess she makes.

I have also heard that changes in the house can contribute to the relapses - have you recently started back at grad school after the summer? That could be part of the change - if so, she'll come around, you might just need to talk her through the change some. Good luck!
