Has anyone else experenced extreme hair loss after giving birth. My son was born in Feb. I have lost enough hair that on one side of my head I have bald patches. Which are growing back, but I am still losing a ton, hand fulls in the shower. When will it stop.

What can I do next?

You are not alone. My son was born on Jan. 18 and I noticed the hair loss about the 5th month postpartum. I did some checking on the internet and it seems to be normal. I thought that it might be related to my birth control pills but it was not. The hair loss seems to be getting better now.

I heard there is a shampoo out there that works wonders during this terrible phase...Propecia? I might have the name wrong but go to Target or somewhere like that and ask the pharmacist. They are always so helpful.

Personally I would check with your OBGYN...it sounds a little extreme to me. Also I have been told about a shampoo called Nioxin. I think you have to buy it at Beauty Brands or some place like that.

M.,
It's almost done. It is very normal to have this much hair loss and usually stops around 6 months. The good thing is that it will grow back. I have had this happen after every pregnancy and it is very scary. Don't worry! Congrats on your beautiful baby boy!!

Hi M.,

My hair fell out at an alarming rate, too, after the birth of my twins. And I have fine hair to begin with so, it was horrible! Anyway, it truly took just about a full year for that to stop and my hair to return to normal ... so don't despair, just be patient!

I also lost a lot of hair after my first baby. Part of that I think was because I didn't loose much at all when I was pregnant so it all fell out at once after the hormones went away. As your hormones level out, the hair lose will go back to normal too. It's not fun in the process but it will go away eventually.

M.,

I lost a ton of hair with my youngest two kids. It seemed to be worse with my boy. I don't think it slowed down until a few months after I stopped breastfeeding him. It's just from all the change in your hormones. But it does stop. Make sure your taking plenty of vitamins.

I had major hair loss with my last baby. It lasted for about year. My hair person and I were talking about the rogain thing just to let you knw how bad it got. But she said that when I would stop using that product that I would end up with the same problem. So I kept my hair short as to camo the loss and thinning spots. You could also use a hair product intended for volume...that helped as well. It's hormonal and from the epidural...at least for me it was. My doctor said it could happen. I know it's frustrating and irritating and everything else...it's like you need one more thing ya know. Good luck!

Totally normal. When you're pregnant, your body retains EVERYTHING just in case it needs it for the baby - including hair. I have really thick frizzy/wavy/curly hair anyway, so it was normal for me to have nickel to quarter size hair clumps in the shower (gross, I know). But then I got pregnant and stopped losing hair at all. When our daughter was 4 or 5 mos old it started coming out - huge, golf ball size hairballs. I knew it was normal, but it was still weird, creepy and gross. I think she was 9 or 10 months old when it started to taper off. She'll be 1 in a couple of weeks and I'm back to the regular loss again. Don't worry - it will go back to normal.
