Postpartum Backache?

I am 9 weeks postpartum and in the last few days I have been having such bad back pain! It hurts just to walk around the house. My question is this... If the backache is related to my pregnancy and giving birth (i.e. postpartum, is it normal to not experience it until now? Wouldn't it have started sooner? Also, I am just wondering if there is another cause for my backache.

What can I do next?

Hi J.,

If it hurts still after one week, I'd go to the doctor.

I had back pain after the birth of my second child for months and months. Finally went to the doctor. It turns out my abdominal muscles didn't get back into shape. It's these muscles that hold us up, not our back muscles. After a couple of visits to a physical therapist and daily stretches, I felt great.

I liked your other comments too. It could be because you're bending over so much to change diapers and such. And the other comment - if it hurts when you move, you may have pulled something.

Good luck!!!

Just an idea, but maybe it is from lugging baby + stuff all over?

Be sure to warm up and do stretches. If it is hurting to walk and move, you may have pulled something; you can try ice and ibuprofen. You should probably go to the doctor if it's not feeling better in a week or so or if you're pretty sure it isn't muscle pain but rather something deeper.

Best wishes!

Did you have an epidural or spinal? Is it your lower back? My back hurt for a long time after I had my c-section. It hurt from the spinal I was given.

Hi,
Be mindful of your posture, especially if you are nursing. Sometimes you get into a "tweaked" position due to fatigue. Prop yourself up really good and be aware of your posture.

Best wishes.

Hi J.
congrats on your new baby.. It prob is due in part to the pregnancy but also continually lifting your new baby and bending over to change your son. not to worry though, get one of those wraps you strap around your stomach and back, they usually attach in the front with velcro. I forget the proper name of them, but many women use them right after giving birth to help hold their abdominal muscles in place. Additionally and only if your doctor says it's ok to begin exercising, I would try and begin to strengthen your stomach muscles , nowadays, there are yoga/exercise classes you can take specifically designed for new moms. They do all these exercises that help target your core muscles. Also, perhaps when your son is napping or in the evening, try and take an epsom salt bath and then afterwards, rub tiger balm on your lower back, I found this to be comforting and helpful.

good luck to you!
