I have had the Mirena IUD in place since my son was born 4 years ago. I am wanting to get it removed at my annual visit and was wondering if any other women had trouble conceiving after Mirena or if the transition was easy? I have not had a period since my son was conceived in September 2003 so I am thinking that waiting until my body is working at 100%. Any advice will be helpful!

What can I do next?

You may have had "periods" but did not notice them as the Mirena makes them very very very light. I asked my doctor about trouble concieving after having the Mirena and he said that he has never heard of any troubles in conceiving after it is removed.
FYI: I LOVED my IUD. It is the BEST form of birth control as far as I'm concerned!!

Hello,
So for me it was easy conceiving after Mirena. It only took like 2 months or so. Unfortunetly that did end in a miscarraige, not sure if it was IUD related or not. I then got pregnant 2 months after that. I know have a wonderful 10 month old baby girl. Good luck!

Please make sure you keep up on all your exames & tests with this product! I had the same IUD & it gave me a form of cancer! I had cervical issues & required treatment! If we hadn't caught it so early I would have had full blown cancer! I still had a hard time though & really hope no one else ever experiences that but it can happen! So make sure you are tested & retested as often as your health care provider asks you to be!

My periods started about 3 weeks after I had my Mirena removed, and they have been regular since then. I am not trying to conceive so I don't have any advice with regards to that. But it seemed like my body went back to normal pretty quickly after the Mirena was removed.

All the information you have received sounds so positive that I will add mine in. My midwife said that after I had it removed that it could take anywhere from 3-months to a year to get pregnant. She took it out and 2 1/2 weeks later I was pregnant and I have a beautiful baby boy that was over 11lbs.

I want to first wish you luck, and hope that my experince is not yours. I had my IUD removed just about a year ago as my husband and I were ready for a second child. I did get pregnant in September 07, however I miscarried. Since then I have only had 5 periods, and 1 was chemicly induced by my docs. they said that sometimes this happens. but they are not sure why, considering that my periods did not stop while I had the iud in place, and that I had only had it for about 16months. I wish you the best of luck, and hope that you will not have these same issues.

I had mine for two years, got it out in jan 2007, had one period then was pregnant two weeks after that first period! So within six weeks we got pregnant. We are very fertile together though and before mirena I had very regular periods, so those factors may have helped us. Good luck!

I had a mirena too, and when we had it removed, I had a period within a couple of weeks, and was pregnant the next month. We now have a healthy 4 month old little boy. Good luck!

I had the Mirena inserted after my son was born six years ago. Kept it in for close to 3 years. I had it removed Feb. 2005, waited a 2 monthes to make sure my period had returned normally. Started trying in an offhand way, then in June guesstimated when I would be ovulating and got pregnant with my daughter with no problems. When I asked the doc at my preg. confirmation appointment if the Mirena would affect the viability of the pregnancy she just asked if I had had a normal period yet, so...
I do tend to be kind of a "Fertile Myrtle,"(hence the Mirena, we weren't taking any chances) but if you didn't have trouble getting pregnant the first time you should be good to go this time too. Anyway, hope this helps.

Don't mean to sound negative but they usually recommend the IUD for women who have atleast 1 child because it could cause infertility. My guess is that it's a very small percentage. I'm sure you'll be fine. Just throwing it out there for others who may not be able to conceive yet.

I had my Mirena IUD in for two years when I had mine removed a couple months ago. I had mine removed for other reasons that conceiving; my body was reacting horribly to it.

Anyway, I too had not had a cycle since my son was conceived in October of 2005. My cycle after I had the IUD removed has been SUPER heavy, no real cramping just super, super heavy. It still only lasted a week and got lighter as the days went on, but for days two, three and four it was heavy. I have had two cycles since it has been removed, and they are have been exactly 30 days apart, so the legnth between was a little more than my what used to usual 28 days.

Hope this helps.

My transition was easy. I had my Mirena IUD removed in September and became pregnant in November. Be advised, once it's removed you are ready to go. My understanding is that your body is still ovulating normally the whole time you have the IUD and that it works first by being a physical disupter of the uterine lining by making it an unfavorable place for implantation, and second by secreting a low dose of progesterone that thickens the mucus making it hard for the swimmers to get by. Goodluck!

Did you say you have a child that is 20 years old? WOW!! What a big age span. I had a mirena for several years and had no trouble conceiving. You should be just fine
