Popular Music Recommendations for 7 Year Old Girl

Hi Mommas!!

So I just got off the phone with my Aunt, who is babysitting her grand daughter. In the course of the conversation the musicians that like she likes came up. In the list wasLady Gaga - in fact that is her current favorite. Yikes! Since her birthday is coming up, and since she is my cousin's child and calls me Aunt (yeah, we mis-label the family tree on a regular basis) I want to send her more appropriate music...she loves to sing and dance, so it needs to be upbeat and fun - but, I really think Gaga is not appropriate for a 7 year old.

I need some recommendations. I was thinking Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato. Do any of you wonderful Moms have any other ideas? Also, any contemporary Christian music suggestions would be appreciated.

I am a little out of the loop on music for little girls as I live with a 15 year old boy. While he can tell me which songs/artists are "nasty" he really doesn't know what to get her either.

Thanks so much for your help.

What can I do next?

You know the thing about an idea whose time has come? If she's already been exposed to and gotten a taste for music like Lady Gaga's, it's going to be very difficult to "regress" her to what you feel is more age appropriate music. At least it will be difficult until she becomes a parent and starts liking some of the music marketed toward her own kids. (My husband is a huge Metal Head, but will occasionally sneak a Selena Gomez song or two into his playlist because he genuinely likes it.)

Don't be too harsh on Gaga, though. I love the sentiment of Born This Way and feel it is appropriate for girls of all ages. I was brought up listening to everything from the Beatles to Barry Manilow and have managed to never live in a Yellow Submarine nor merengue at the Copa Cabana. :-)

About the Flyleaf Cassie comment, with it not being kid appropriate, yes it is not the best song but it is about the Columnbine shooting.
"Do you believe in God
Written on the bullet
Say yes to pull the trigger
Do you believe in God
Written on the bullet
And Cassie pulled the trigger"

The name is based off of two girls, Rachel Scott and Cassie Bernall who when asked by the two boys if they believed in god, at gunpoint, said yes. Therefor she pulled her own trigger for God.
No it is not appropriate for a 7 year old, but it is not a bad song in the least. It is inappropriate for her understanding more than anything, and if you explained to her the meaning it wouldn't be all that bad. Just don't let her think that its about suicide like my younger sister got told by her friend. I got a book when I was 12 about Cassie Bernall, there are quite a few out there so if you want to do some of your own research I recommend that.

Skillet is a good Christian band.
Owl City is a good more upbeat band.

I work at Hot Topic and it requires me to do research on things we sell musically so if you have any band in question feel free to PM me and I'll tell you what I know.

Also, I havn't read but the response right below me, but keep her away from Nikki Minaj and Wiz Kalifha (I think I spelled that wrong) I had a girl about 6 or 7 come in and buy their CDs with the mother right there, least to say I was appalled.

Urg. I don't care for Gaga. Or a lot of the other stuff that is out there. The music I can deal with...it's the lyrics that I can't stand. I'm assuming that that is why the other posters suggested KidzBop. She probably would like that.

Our kids tend to listen to the same kind of stuff that my husband does (he's really an aficionado with a wide eclectic range of tastes from country, to soul, to bluegrass, to grunge to whatever... a HUGE U2 fan, but also stuff like Blue Rodeo, Snow Patrol, and on and on of folks you probably thought were dead or have never heard of). Anyway, our kids like the stuff he plays and we always play what he likes and never "kids" music which he can't stand. So our kids LIKE when we play Corb Lund, or BellX1, or Brad Paisley, Brian Setzer, Ryan Adams, Chris Isaak, Chris Thile, Colin Hay, Crowded House, Wilco, Dierks Bentley, Keith Urban, Lyle Lovett, The Finn Brothers, Great Big Sea, James Hunter, Jim Lauderdale, Keane, Lenny Kravitz, Liam Finn, Mark Knopfler, Muse, Punch Brothers, Nickel Creek, Pearl Jam, and especially the Police. Our kids always joke with us when an old Police song comes on the radio ("Everybody, be cool, it's the po po!") LOL

Sorry.... I know this isn't much help. My son is 13 and he likes some old music (Elvis, Harry Connick Jr., etc) and the stuff hubby likes now. Our daughter is 10 and she did enjoy some of the more "kiddie" music when she was much younger, but she is past it now.

Do you think that she would like Laurie Berkner? We all could listen to her (except hubby, lol). Those are great! I think one of my all time favorites was Victor Vito.
Victor vito and freddie vasco
Ate a burrito with tabasco
They put it on their rice
They put it on their beans
On their rutabagas
And on their collard greens

This link is for a more recent CD. It doesn't have Victor Vito on it though. :(

There is a group out of Canada called God Rocks and their music is really good. They have a show that they air on TBN and Daystar too. You can buy their music cds off of their website or at Mardel's . I bought some for my daughter at Mardel's and my husband and I both really love listening to them too.

My kids LOVE the Kids Bopz Cds. It is all the more popular music but cleaned up and kids sing it. My daughter is 7 and has about 7 of these cd's. The newest one just came out (#20) and it is good. Good variety of music from popular artists.

My daughter is 6 1/2 and loves The Fresh Beat Band. They are a Nick Jr. creation, but their music has a good beat and they even have a little video for their newest song, "Here We Go". A friend of mine at work said that the song was #1 on the ITunes list for kids.

I like the Disneymania CDs. Lots of classic disney songs remade by current (and recent) artists. Temp, style, and sometimes language (Spanish) changed for some songs. Lots of fun!

My stepdaughter likes all of those you mentioned, plus Carrie Underwood. You might also check out Tori Vega from Nickelodeon's Victorious. However, Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood both have some songs that are a little "older" than what I'd like for her to listen to as a 10-year-old.

On the Contemporary Christian front, she loves The Rubyz, Pure NRG and ZOEgirl. Those are all upbeat. She even loves to make her own music videos complete with original dance moves! :)

Hope that helps!

Lady gaga Isn't too inappropriate! Maybe certain Songs but the beat is always really catchy. There are clean versions of many popular songs, my kids like Kesha, Justin bieber, some of the glee songs, cascada-evacuate the dancefloor, sugarland-stuck like glue, only the love story song by Taylor swift, Selena gomez, Miley Cyrus, fergie-clumsy, some other country songs, the beatles, old Michael Jackson, and queen. I'd make her a mixed cd or buy the kidz bop ones!
