My Dr. said it was ok for a breastfed baby to have no bowel movement for up to a week. He suggested if the baby is uncomfortable to buy glycerin supositories. Good luck.
Hello mamas! My 14 week old daughter hasn't had a poopy diaper in over 48 hours!! She is breastfed only...no formula. Is this normal or do I need to contact our doctor??
Thanks so much for your input! I so appreciate it! My daughter actually had a small poopy diaper this evening! Yea! :)

I am going throught the same thing right now. At 8 weeks old my son decided to go 5 days without pooping. We called the Dr. and we were told to try a glycerine suppository. 10 minutes later he filled his diaper.
He is now 3 months old and we still have to help him along every once in a while with the suppository.
The Dr said that after the 3rd month many children will suddenly start going every other day or every 3 days.
I wouldn't worry too much. Hope this helps!!!

It might be constipation if she is not having bowel movement for the couple of days. My baby was the same and I got rid of this thing by giving him babies magic tea that was right for his tummy issues. It's completely safe as it's organic.
Hi!
I am a mom to a 7 month old girl and when she was a newborn it would have been very strange for her not to have a poopy diaper for that amount of time. i think i would contact your doctor bc it could mean she needs some help!

Good Morning,
For a baby tht little, plus breast milk, she should be going after every feeding. That is what normally happens with breat milk. I am a mother of three children 6,4,2. I breast fed all of the. THe important rule about breast milk is what you eat. If you are not eating enough veggies the baby will have a hard time going to the bathroom. For today try and eat plenty of fruits and veggies and try drinking a little prune juice. I know YUK.. but it will work. If it doesnt then all the doc.
Good luck

Totally normal! Don't worry.
Ask the pedi, but watered down Pear Juice really did the trick on my DD. (Mix with half water, half juice for a total of 2 ounces at a time. Fed to the baby, not you, thankfully!) After approved by the pedi, I was able to use this trick whenever needed, and MAN does it work. Prune juice also helps, but I considered it to be the BIG GUN, only used if Pear Juice didn't work. My pedi said I didn't have to call her until after 7 days of no poop, once we established this was going to be the norm for her. I also cut down on my intake of dairy and nuts which seemed to help my DD in various ways.
BTW, you can get Pear or Prune juice in 4 ounce bottles at the grocery or pharmacy in the baby food isle. I didn't have a clue where to find pear juice! Look for the organic variety if possible.
Good luck, and ENJOY that diaper when it does come. ;-) If you have never experienced an up the back, explosive BM, then you may soon be introduced to one, but maybe not. Don't be surprised either way!
Sounds perfectly normal for a breast fed baby. Both my sons did this, and my older son went 10-12 days without pooping starting about 3 months. My dr. said you can use the suppositorirs, but they weren't necessary. I tried it, but soon learned that as long as he was comfortable there was really no point to it!!
I know it's scarey, but enjoy the lack of poopy diapers. She will become more "regular" when you start feeding her solids!!
Congratulations on breastfeeding! Breastmilk is the PERFECT food for babies therefore they utilize nearly every part of it. Breastfed babies do NOT have a bowel movement after every meal. Often, they go several days in between BMs. My son was exclusively breastfed and only had a BM every 6-7 days. Our labor doula said her son went 10 days between BMs. Formula babies go more often because they have more waste to get rid of from the formula. As long as your daughter is having enough wet diapers and is not straining to go poo, just relax and enjoy another benefit of breastfeeding!

This is normal for a breastfed baby. I had the same concern with my daughter, so I asked her Pedi about it and she said that it is almost impossible for a breastfed baby to get constipated, so don't worry!
Hi C.,
All 4 of my babies did this. It always stressed me out, but is normal. I breastfed them all and they would usually only go once a week. Occasionally, they would go almost 2 weeks. My dr. suggested glycerin suppositories, but you may want to check with your pediatrician before doing this.
Hope this helps,

Mom to 4: ds(6), dd(4), ds(2), ds(10 mo)
My 2 daughters went regularly... so when I had my baby son (almost 1 year ago!) and he wasn't going every day, it worried me. When I asked the pediatrician, she said that it was normal. It's his schedule not everyone else's. Now if she strains or cries or looks like she is having problems having a bowel movement or is cranky or seems constipated, then you should give her some prune juice. Pediatricians recommend diluted prune juice first before anything.
That is completely normal for a breast-fed baby! Don't worry, it will come....and be prepared..it may be explosive! ;-)

It is completely normal. My baby went four days without a dirty diaper; I did call the doctor, and he said that was completely normal. It is good to get advice from other mothers, but you should always feel comfortable calling your pediatrician. I know for me, it always helps to hear it from my doctor.
two of my kids did the same. After 10 days no poopy diaper I went to the pediatrician. Everything normal, just no poop. Glycerin sup didn't help. When you breastfeed it can be perfectly normal. One was about 7 weeks old, and did poo only after 14(!!!!) days. The other was about 16 weeks and it took hem 12 days. So please don't worry about only 2 days. (if everything looks fine, you can press on the belly, no pain, and normal happy behavior)
Good luck! I.
My little boy had the same problem. I took him to the Dr. and he said to give him any juice that starts with a P. You need to dillute it but you can give her Pear or Prune juice and it will get her going. I also breastfed and he took the juice and it regulated him.
I hope this helps - make sure to do half water and half juice.
Thanks,
S.' P.

C.,
This is absolutely normal for a solely breastfed infant. My lactation consultant informed me that a perfectly healthy solely breastfed infant may not have a BM for several days, even weeks. She provided medical documentation showing where a breastfed infant went without a BM for approximately 4 weeks, and this is totally normal. She explained that breast milk is such an effecient fuel source that it is consumed absolutely with very little waste.
Hope this helps,
Moya
Both my kids have been that way. When we were at the hospital after having both our babies they tell you that you should have "x" many wet diapers and "x" many poopie diapers a day. So, once we got home we counted every diaper. Well, when my first one had gone 2 days without pooping we cheered when he finally did go. Oh, the things that parents get excited about with their babies. It happened again but it was 3 days the second time so I call the doctor. And, 2 years later I am going through it all over again with my 5 month old. I BF my first and am BF my second now.
My pediatrician told me that some babies will only poop once every 4 days. This scared me!!! So, now I don't worry when I don't get a poopie diaper. The funny thing is that my 5 month old only poops once on Fridays and once again on Saturdays. Now, call that strange, I know. Every one I tell laughs at me. But, I have her poopies down to a science now. Since they build up for so long, we usually have blow outs when she finally goes. So, she even poops around the same time every Friday and Saturday, so I plan my errands around when I know she is gonna poop so I don't have that mess out in public or in the car or car seat!!!
So, when this first happend to me, I started using Mylicon drops. But that just makes the poop sticky and stringy and harder to clean when they finally go. I would say don't worry it will come and when it does you will be happy, but mother's know best deep down in their heart and if it will ease your mind call your babies doctor.
I am not sure about your baby, but I exclusively breastfed both my daughters. And what no one tells you is that after they get a certain age, BF babies can go like 5 days before pooping. They use most all of the milk unlike formula. But I will tell you, day 5 was not pretty :(!!!
We still battle this problem 15 months later! My son went about 7 days w/o pooping, (he was EBF too) and my dr said only to use the suppositories in an emergency...and I did a couple of times. But when I let it go 7 days, he began bleeding from the hard pebbles. That's probably the biggest sign-are your baby's poops hard or watery and soft? Another tip is that some peds will allow prune juice like 1 oz per day to help them go. When we tried that, WHEW it works! I still can't give my son juice because it works so well!!!!! lol! So, I would call the dr and ask what they recommend.
