My grandson has EXtreamly loose stools. First we are thinking teething... then it a variety of foods.... so we have been to the doc and she did allergy testing...nothing I now try to give him plain yogurt, bananas, rice, broccoli...We have been trying this just to bind him up and he is never even firm... It's so tiring to have to take him to the sink every time he goes.... he is 14 months old and this has been going on for at least 7 months. He was breast feed in the beginning and the stools were messy then too. They are often grainy feeling too. any body have any ideas? S.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We did the milk elimination... harder than you think .. he is a chunky monkey and eats very well. He doesn't get cooies etc because of this problem. He does get the yum yums wagon wheels for snacks. He does get french fries when we go out to eat once a week or so. Stopped juice altogether.water and milk and only milk once a day or so he is not a big fan of milk and it is lactose free. I will try the whole grain bread and probiotics. He has been to the doc with this and they do't seemed concern..it's just getting really old having to bath him almost everytime he goes...thank you all for your help....

Did you test him to see if he has celiac disease. Sometimes, when people are allergic to gluten then they can have loose stools. Have some blood tests done for that and see if that may be an underlying issue. I have someone at home with celiac disease so, this is why I suggest to have this done. This will not show up on an regular allergy test. He could also be lactose intolerant. Have all these things looked at. Good luck

whole grains help, at least with my kids they do. I have to either buy the expensive 5 dollar bread or bake the bread myself.

Is he getting enough nutrients and developing properly? Is he drinking lots of juice? What about eating cookies or foods with a high sugar content?

My daughter had the same problem from the time she was born, it used to leak out of her diapers. Since she was breastfed I expected it at first, but as it continued after solids were introduced the doctor advised diluting her apple juice half and half with water, then finally we had to stop giving it to her altogether. We also had to stop allowing her to eat anything with refined sugar, so lots of breakfast cereals were out. She was always on the thin side so I was worried, but he said since there were no allergies, she was developing properly, etc., to ride it out, and that he would refer us to a gastroenterologist if anything changed.

It seems she was about 2 before things began to firm up gradually, and she did eventually outgrow the problem.

Has he been checked for GI infection? Have you removed wheat or gluten from diet that may have an effect as well.

Have you tried eliminating dairy? He could be lactose intolerant. If he pediatrician couldn't find anything wrong then it's probably nothing to worry about, you may want to try different diapers that are more absorbent. Teething could also be the culprit. Just an fyi It's perfectly normal for breast-fed babies to have loose grainy stool.

If he or people he spends a lot of time with have been in another country or in the woods/country he may have something like giardia. The only way to know is to test a stool sample.

I think I'd ask the doctor to have his stool checked, anyway. I went hiking in the Grand Canyon. Came back with diarrhea. Doctor kept saying it was IBS. After several weeks I insisted and he ordered a test and sure enough I had giardia. You catch the bugs from untreated water or dirt.

Probiotics. They make them specifically for kids. Culturelle. I mix a packet right into my kids first morning drink.

Same thing happened to my daughter and I was nervous she was lactose intolerant. Turns out, we just cut back on the amount of milk she was drinking....after a week or so, we starting seeing a difference. So, she basically only drank water, which she wasn't happy about. We eventually went back to giving her small amounts of milk and she was fine! Good-luck!
