We lucked out with our first. He's always been a healthy lil guy. Our 10 month old has had a rough past three months. From my previous post I thought his adenoid issues were returning but it turns out he's alright in that department (yay!). He's fever free, has a wet sounding cough, not struggling for air, clear lung sounds...he cranky, has small coughing fits that sometimes cause him to throw up, he hasn't eaten any food...nursing the same...occasionally will snack on Cheerios...and for the past two days has pooped like watery/yellow/green...not frequent...two or three times a day. He was on a course of antibiotics for 10 days and prednisone...this ended 6 days ago...he had some diarrhea with the antibiotic but yogurt seemed to help. I'm not sure what's going on with him. He's peeing the same and no s/s of dehydration. My nurses logic is failing me. He doesn't have a temp. Is nursing normally. Very watery stools...seriously like water for two days...has a wet cough and some nasal drainage...and has thrown up a few times if he coughs... Never without a cough. He plays fairly well...not his normal...but not lethargic...can the drainage cause his stools to look like this? A d the coughing cause the vomiting? The vomit is white... Like breastmilk. Sorry if I grossed you all out but I'm really stumped what to do with him. I cringe at the thought of an antibiotic so soon, which I don't think he needs since its probably a viral thing...but any advice? I'm just stumped. His coughing isn't a chronic thing. A couple of times during the night. A few times on and off during the day.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

To clarify...he had massive congestion without any other symptoms for three months. He was on a steroid and antibiotic for this again and things are fine there (knock on wood...found a great ENT who actually did his job). This is a new thing. The cough and vomiting and diarrhea. But no other symptoms. I plan to take him to the dr on Monday if things haven't cleared up but without a fever what could be going on? I've used all my nursing judgment to try and figure out what's going on and I'm stumped.

I think that you need to get a second opinion from another doctor about the baby. Coughing certainly can cause vomiting (gag reflex). Discuss the possibility of reactive airway disease with the doctor. It's a precursor to asthma. My son had it around that age, but he did NOT end up with asthma, thank goodness.

Your doctor needs to be giving you some medicine to turn this thing around with his bowel movements. I don't think you're getting enough proactive help and your baby's intestines are suffering. Time to take the bull by the horns here with the doctor.

My son had something similar around the same age after being sick. We used a humidifier in his room and that helped with the cough (and the resultant vomiting). Probiotic drops helped his tummy. See if you can get him to eat soe bananas or toast too.

That said, check with your pediatrician...

Good luck!

Sounds like it could be teething that can cause watery stools, cough in the back of the throat. Good luck!

post nasal drip, mucus dripping down the throat, can accumulate and cause vomiting. A baby, cannot spit out, mucus that is going down the throat.

I would take him for a follow up check up.
He is so young.
And he is coughing.
And it sounds wet.
Keep him elevated, because accumulated mucus in the throat etc., can clog the airways and cause, choking. Too.
And his poop does not sound normal.

And people can get sick back to back, with another type of virus.
My son did once.

I would have the dr definitely check for C.diff with the diarrhea. It can happen after the antibiotics are done. Hopefully that isn't the case but get him checked out.

I think the coughing is probably the cause of the vomiting, so once the cough is under control that should stop.
