Pinched Nerve While Prego!

Has anyone had a pinched nerve while prego that caused them to have pain in their hips when they walk? I've been experiencing this the last few days and wondering if that's what it is. I didn't fall down or hurt myself in any way. I'm 31 weeks by the way! I have to add that I've had really bad hip pain for like the last 4 nights!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Most of you keep saying to go see a chiropractor, but I'm deathly afraid of going. I've never been to one and I guess it's the unknown that scares the crap out of me! :) Does it hurt when you go? Do you hear the cracking of bones and such? I also can't stand any kind of popping or cracking sounds. It totally grosses me out!

it happened with all 5 of my pregnancies toward the end... i found that if i crawled for a few paces it relieved it somewhat and then i would go to a wall and walk my hands up it and stand again.

My son is 34 now, but maybe it will still be helpful to do what my OB told me to do way back then. I had the same pain, in my hip, butt, down the leg. He told me to sit cross legged on the floor more often. What we called Indian style. It helps stretch out muscles and tendons and ligaments that will need to stretch and open wider for giving birth so it helps later too. It sorta helps align things better and makes it feel good. I did this while I folded laundry and sorted magazines and wrote letters, and watched tv. It really worked for me.
Also, he told me its common in pregnancy, but is the same thing that comes back to haunt you at 40. He was right. I still sit on the floor cross legged now and then. It helps keep it from hurting so much. Its just a lot harder to get up now,,lol

Talk to your doc about it. I sister had to do physical therapy while she was pregnant to make it better.

There are chiropractors that are trained in helping prego women. It's the webster technique, I think. I've only heard about it, never used it, but I might this time. I get lots of pains like that. A lot of women suggest the webster technique/chiropractor.

Sounds like the sciatic nerve pain that I had when pregnant. Go to a chiropractor or an osteopathic doctor & get adjusted. You'll feel like a new woman!

The first chiropractic adjustment I ever had was by an osteopathic doctor during my first pregnancy. I was amazed at how much better I felt after the adjustment. The sciatic nerve pain entirely disappeared.

Try taking a warm bath. It helps you to relax and makes the pain subside!

I couldn't walk the last three weeks of my 1st pregnancy b.c of this. Now I'm 32 weeks on 2nd preg. and having same problems. A maternity support belt helps. Good shoes and ice. I didn't find PT to be that helpful my first pregnancy and the sciatic pain continued the last 3 years, not as bad, but has not gone away :( Chiropractic has helped, but not eliminated this frustrating problem. Cat camel yoga stretch helps, just don't let your belly sway/collapse your back very much. good luck. It's a pain in the A$$, literally, dealing with this problem.

Hi A.,

I agree about the chiropractor. If you don't know one you can go to www.upcspine.com and find one in your area. Chiropractic care should be a regular thing when you are pregnant. Your bones are moving and your sleeping patterns are changing and things can get pinched as you well know. It will also make the delivery easier.

Interview them as you would any doctor. They should understand not only the nuerological system but how it affects the immune system. Chiropractic patients do not get sick as often as those who allow their spine to stay in the wrong place...think of a kink in a hose....no water or the water shoots the wrong way. The spine is critical to good health.

Congratulations on your little one!

Go see your chiropracter it will help your back a lot, especially as you get to the end of your pregnancy! I know it helped me a lot and that was many years ago...my daughter had the same problem and it helped her a lot as well!

Yes, I would try a chiropractor. This happened to my friend while pregnant and a few visits to the chiro and some stretches & exercises hepled. Also, look up online some stretches to help with your particular issue if u can't get to a chiro. Also a foam roller can work wonders!! Hope u feel better!

I feel your pain - literally! Same thing happened to me during my pregnancies. What I did was slept on my side (left or right unless doc specifies left for high-risk reasons) and wedged pillows between my knees and along my spine and another to "hug" while sleeping. Yes, it takes away any feelings of romance when your SO sees you with your fluffy entourage, but short of delivering, anything that can take the pressure off your hips and spine is helpful. Also, tennis ball massages across your lower back & hips might be helpful, too. Good luck!

Yikes. This does happen towards the end of pregnancy. I realize you are not close enough to the end of the pregnancy to not care but it does happen. That being said I would call your OB/GYN office for the best info on what to do to not aggrivate it further

YES! I didn't do it but my baby did it to me. The baby was pressing on my sciatic nerve and I could barely walk. My insurance ended up covering physical therapy massages 3 times a week, oh it was wonderful! Ask your OB for a referral.
