Hi Moms, Hubby qualified for his company trip and we are leaving for Mexico next week! WHOO HOO!! We so need this and the company pays for everything...nice! Anyway, I called T Mobile and they said its $1.49 per minute to call from Mexico. I mostly just wanted to call my mom (who will have my kids) to tell her we got there ok and call again before we fly home. I asked T Mobile if sending a text or email would be cheaper and she said NO!!! Its like $15 per megabyte (or something like that). She also said you are charged for even looking at emails, on Facebook, etc. And I can't sleep without noise so I downloaded "sleepy time" app and wanted to run it all night and I'm sure that would cost me hundreds!!! It scared me! I don't want to come home to a huge bill! She mentioned the resort may have internet access...how does that work? Has anyone experienced this? I'm tempted to leave my cell at home and just take hubby's just in case but then maybe we can't even use his. What do you think? Just call real quick when we arrive and before we go and shut it off the rest of the time? Or use the resort computer to send mom an email or what????

What can I do next?

My husbands family are from and alot of them still live in mexico. His family goes to gricery store and gets those caaling cards. You put the money on it and its cheap. You just follow the directions and its easy. Even I figured it out! Have a great time!

I went to Europe last year and I have tMobile. Incoming texts cost nothing it is the outgoing that cost.

Data cost insane amounts of money so if you have a smartphone turn the data off before you leave the country.

What we did was told everyone to text us if they need something. If it isn't important we wouldn't text them back, if it was we would. We were there for 18 days and it I ran up around $50 in extra costs between calling and texting.

Trust me they get you with the data!

It will probably cost more to use the hotel internet than to use your phone to call home. Why don't you tell your mom you will be calling, but not to answer the phone. When she sees your number on the caller id, she will know you are there safe and to not pick up so you are not charged. Personally I would go the phone card route so I know I could have contact.

I went to Mexico in March with my daughter, and silly me, I left my laptop at home and decided to just use my phone. I ended up with a bigger bill than I wanted, even though I kept my use to a minimum. The place we stayed did have internet, so I could've checked in over that instead, and could have Skyped instead of called on my phone... Next time!

The place we stayed had an Internet Cafe where for very little cost you could use their computers.

If you have a Smartphone, you can set it up to use the wifi connection when you are at your resort, so that will cut down on your data usage some.

I would definitely take your phones! Both of them. You never know if
you'll need them in an emergency.
Did you ask T Mobile if they had an "international calling plan"?
Don't use your phone to fall asleep. Take an ipod w/earphones or docking station to listen to music to fall asleep.
Or take a small portable radio that runs on batteries.
Use resort computer to check emails.
Also ask resort how much per min to use the phones they provide for guests.
