Okay ladies, here we go again, it seems I never have a question and suddenly I have many. I just hope you can help me out. I am looking for a training school for a dog, that was spawned by the devil as a matter of fact.) He is 11 months old and rescued from a shelter. I would like to find an obedience school around mckinney, collin county that I can send him to, he will be trained, I can go pick him up and learn the commands etc and what I need to do to keep up with his training and finally have an obedient dog. My grandson fell in love with this dog and it was nearly time for him to be put down so we took him home. Of course I have him and the responsibility. I checked with petsmart and they don't really get into much training except basic commands such as sit, stay, type of thing. I need something to train this dog that inanimate objects are not to be chewed, including batteries, pill bottles, toys, etc. I also need him to learn that he doesn't have to go the light of speed thru the house, he can zoom thru so fast that it makes me tired watching him. His name is patrick, he's half bassett half pug. I don't know which part is the demon but together it's quite a mixture. Please let me know if you know anyone that can help with training or even prescribing doggie prozac.
Wow, I got some really good responses but I also got some really bad hate mail. I know the puppy has issues, I was just trying to find the best way for both of us to get him some training and make the transition easier, not to be told to take him back or put him down. That's unfortunate when someone wants to try to do the right thing and your judged but for those who gave me recommendations and names and phone #'s, thank you, that's what it's all about, sharing things to help each other.

Ah, us dogs nuts can be a little rude at times, sorry. It seems to me someone asking and looking for trainers is on the right tract.
I have heard of a kennel up that way that does the kind of training you are looking for. But I can not remember their name, I will see if I can look it up.
Many friends of mine has used Eureka, they are in Mckinney. It wouldn't hurt to give them a call to see if they might work for you. And let me tell you these have been Boston Terriers, and I am just in love with what they have done with some of these dogs.

While the training you are looking for is not one I usually would encourage they canbe extremely helpful, and despite some beliefs, I have rarely ever heard of the owner not being able to resume where the trainers left off. Good Luck, and I will ask around and see if I can remember the Kennel.
Dogs who come from a shelter can have some serious mental illness issues. We have 2 from there, and it took some time for the second one to chill out. Lots of love helped. However, it sounds to me like you resent the dog for existing, and that will make it challenging to instill any discipline. Sure, the dogs learn cues and commands, but who gives them? You. And make sure that the grandson goes, too. After all, he was the one who wanted the dog. It might help you to understand him more, too!
You say that you work full-time, and the puppy is only 11 months old. If you have him in a crate the whole day, then naturally he is going to have to get all of that energy out somehow. Honestly, it doesn't sound like a good fit for you at this point in your life, no matter how much your grandson loves him. But if you are determined to keep him, then I'm glad that you are taking steps to make everyone happy. Good luck!

I too had a dog with some issues - mainly growling at my girls and she (the dog) was only 4 months old! We adopted her froma family moving away. I was ready to give her to the pound as well and then I used this web site to ask for dog trainer recommendations. We decided to go with "The Educated Dog" - Aarron Stewart is the trainer. He has 15 years of training narcotics dogs and so is VERY knowledgeable with "problem" dogs.
He comes to your home for 3 hours and trains YOU how to handle your dog. With a problem dog that is really the only way to do it you are not simply teaching commands. ItT is a one-time thing and costs $300. I can honestly tell you that it was well worth the money. We owned dogs before and could have used this training then. try Collin County Canine. We had them come to our house and do personal training with our dog or they also have it where you drop them off and then pick them up. They are great and worked wonders with our dog.

Eeeew this is a case for Cesar Milan...Have you seen his show on Discovery (?) he has books and videos out. It sounds like you need to send him away to doggie camp if you even want to keep him. He's a high maintenance dog needing lots of exercise and should be in a crate wen u aren't home. Gosh, this is tough. Going to cost u some $$. I think I might start over. Ur priorities are right on track.

I have networked with these folks and I hear wonderful reports about their programs. I don't know if they take them and train them, but they are supposed to be pretty good.

If you're still looking, we used Aaron and he's GREAT! Our dog's manners with us, in the house and with guests are so much better. We are still working on it (only because our time with him is not as long as it should be), but the tools Aaron gave us are key to Jake's (our dog) success so far!
I would look into K9 University. There is one in Plano at the corner of Spring Creek and Coit. They take your dogs in, train them, train you, then send them home.
Second in regards to chewing on everything. When you go to work you should crate train him. This will keep him out of trouble and give him a nice place that is all his own.
Third is your zoomies. This dog obviously has a lot of energy and needs to be exercised. Take him to a dog park or someplace where it will wear him out. He will then be a nicer dog at home. This may also be a fun activity for you to get to see your grandson, you can meet him at the dog park. Just keep a close eye on both boys to make sure they get along with others the first few times.

Check craigslist. I see postings all the time for dog training. Some of them will even come to the house.
