Permanent Tooth Growing in Behind Baby Tooth

My 5 yr old has a permanent tooth coming in behind one of his front bottom baby teeth. The baby tooth is just a little loose, not at all about to fall out and the new tooth is poking through just a bit. Does anyone have experience with this? I was told we don't want the new tooth to make it to the halfway point with the baby tooth still in place. I don't know what to do, if I should make an appt or not. We tell him to wiggle, but he's 5 and 5 yr old things take priority over our freaking out!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for everyone's advice. I called Cade's ped dentist this afternoon and was told to apply Orajel, and once it was numb to wiggle it. She said if it wasn't strong enough that she could prescribe some "magic" to help numb it. The only thing they want me to watch for is to make sure the tooth falls out before his adult tooth comes halfway in because then they'll need to pull it. So we're wiggling! Thanks again.

Well, my 6 year old daughter went through the exact same thing with her front upper tooth. After about 2 to 3 weeks of the tooth being somewhat loose, she ate some fish from Fred's and the tooth became very loose and came out. Very painless. I know I'd received other suggestions like apples, hard food items. Hope this helps a little.

When I was that age, all my teeth did that. And every time, my parents would wrestle me and pin me down and wiggle my teeth themselves, while I screamed and cried. Sometimes they would use pliers. (Alas, it was the 80s)
DON'T DO THIS!!!
It was horrible. As I got older, I got bigger, and they really couldn't do this anymore, so in rebellion I held onto those teeth. That is, until I went to the dentist. He just plucked them out like it was nothing.

Hi M.:

I was a Dental Assistant for 4 years before I got pregnant with my twins. You definately need to take your son to the dentist to have this tooth pulled. Try not to make a big deal about it though, b/c if he sees that you are nervous, it will make him scared, and more difficult to work with. As someone else said, I would DEFINATELY take him to a pediatric dentist, b/c they specialize in working with children. They have more ways to make him more comfortable, and they know little tricks to keep him calm. I hope this helps you. Feel free to contact me if you need to! Good luck to you and God Bless! H.

My 9 yr old step daughter just has this problem with one of her molars....it worried me but I figured I'd just wait and see...sure enough about a week or two later the baby tooth made it's way out. I don't see any lingering or future problems...but I'm no dentist. She is doing great though.

I had this problem as a child, and my oldest daughter had this problem. When I took her to the dentist at the time that it first happened, he took note of it, but said that he couldn't do anything about it until age 12. She just turned 12, and we are going for braces at the end of this month. If I were you, I will still take him to the dentist just for good measure, but they probably won't do anything, except keep an eye on it.

Give him apples to eat. Really my son comes home and grabs an apple when his teeth are loose. I would get it checked out b/c you don't want it to get infected.

This did happen with one of my son tooth but the baby tooth was almost out and it did come out like in a day or two.

Good Luck,
L.

My 6 year old son had this happen to both of his front top teeth at the same time. One tooth started to get a little loose around Christmas time. Then in about April I noticed that the other tooth was loose too. Then I looked closer and he had the other teeth growing behind. He looked pretty funny because it pushed the baby teeth outward. If you have ever seen Nanny McPhee. He looked just like her. :-) He finally lost one and then about 3 days later he lost the other. His new teeth are growing in just fine. He had already lost the bottom ones and they started to grow in sideways. They are straightening out though. He got all his teeth 2 at a time and so I think that is why he is loosing them two at a time.

My son is 8 and has had to have 5 baby teeth pulled because of this. For some reason his teeth just don't fall out, they will get a little loose but never loose enough to come out on their own. One of the permanent teeth actually caused an absess when it couldn't push the baby tooth out, so now we don't wait that long, as soon as he has a permanent tooth trying to get out we have the baby tooth removed. I suggest you take your son to a good childrens dentist (a childrens dentist will help him not to be scared, and they will give him "prizes" and fun things to put the baby teeth in) to have the baby tooth removed.

I had this happen to me when I was little, but it was my 2 front teeth and 4 baby teeth that were affected. I went to the dentist and had them pulled, which is what I would recommend. You could try getting him to bite into an apple with that tooth, but it is better to just go to the dentist

My daughter had the same issue with her 2 front teeth. You should make an appointment to have the baby tooth pulled. My daughter developed an abcess which made the whole experience that much more tramatic. We were told by a dentist who just happened to be the room mother that if you wait too long you can cause damage to the permanent tooth. Best of luck. Bring tissue.

I would definetly make a dental appointment for your child. I had that happen to me and my permanant tooth is crooked b/c I didn't get it looked at. At least call and talk to the dentist.

Call your dentist and have him look at it. My oldest son had the same thing happen with his front teeth and our dentist pulled the baby tooth out. He said that it was better to pull it than let it become loose on it's own.

My son is 6 and the same thing happened to him. The dentist said that if the teeth did not fall out on there own then they would pull them at his next appointment, which of course was in another 6 mths. Well his teeth weren't loose at all. It took a couple of months but they (his two bottom front teeth) finally fell out. His permanent teeth had already grown in fully before the others came out. It only took a couple of weeks for the permanent teeth to line up with the existing teeth. The dentist said something about the weight of your tonge pushes them forward.

I have no experience with this, but I would say you definitely need to at least call the dentist to ask what to do. You'll most likely need to take him in to get the baby tooth pulled.

My son is 6 and he has the same problem. You will probably have to take him to the dentist and have them pull it. That is what we have to do. We had one pulled already and are about to have a 2nd one pulled. For some reason some kids just dont loose them as easy as others. But you dont want the permanent tooth to grow in back there then you will have to get braces later if it doesnt come into place on its own, and the best chance of that is getting the baby tooth out of the way ASAP. Just to let you know since it is loose even if it doesnt feel really loose it will come out very easy. My son didnt even know it was over until we showed him the tooth. Good luck!!
