Periods While Pregnant?

I am 4 and 1/2 months pregnant and have been having a difficult pregnancy. At three months it really looked as if I would lose the baby with severe cramping and medium bleeding that lasted for weeks. I was put on bed rest and have been hanging in there thankfully. A healthy ultrasound showed a low placenta, which accounted for the bleeding, but not the cramps. The bleeding and pain stopped for a while and I got a little more active, but it comes back occasionally. The 2nd time I had some bleeding and pain for several days it was exactly one month since the time before (when I had it for weeks). Now I'm having it again about 3 weeks later. I was wondering if this could possibly be a period? My doctor doesn't know, and I am far from home staying off my feet with family right now-not really able to go find a new doctor at the moment. Has anyone ever had periods with cramps and bleeding while pregnant?

What can I do next?

I have and awesome doctor. his name is elias nemah. he is in washington township. I did have a miscarriage before my son. the doctor i had at the time of my 1st pregnancy said he had a paitient who bled a lot during her pregnancy and had a healthy baby.. if you are pregnant you can not have a period. may be they need to do an ultrasound that is more extensive to see if you have any other issues. sometimes you can have benign tumors or other issues that make you bleed. you need to ask for additional testing to make sure everything is okay with the baby also. sorry if this sounds scary. i want you to have piece of mind. hang in there. god bless

I had my period for 3 months while I was pregnant - I didn't know I was pregnant. It wasn't until my boobs all of a sudden got bigger and started to hurt. I went to the OBY/GYN and told them what was going on. They didn't think I was pregnant since I was having periods but they gave me take a pregnancy test at the office. Let me tell you, I was shocked when it came back positive. The doctor/nurses were really shocked when they did the first ultrasound and realized that I was almost 4 months along. (I don't think they believed me when I said I was getting periods.) I had complications with the pregnancy. The placenta was down and had to be put on bed rest for about 2 weeks until it moved up. The doctor suspected that my "periods" might have been bleeding from the placenta being down. I don't buy that, since my bleeding was approx. 28 days apart just like a period. Then I started having contractions at 7 months and they put me on Turbutaline. My water broke at 8 months and I delivered early. I know some people have a discharge because of the hormones, I didn't. Just talk to your OB/GYN and relay your concerns. If you feel something is wrong, push them to check you. Maybe you should get another ultrasound...?? Don't lift too heavy and rest a lot. I wish you the best.

At least CALL your doctor. If he suggests you see someone right away, you DO it. If you lose this baby, you will go through all kinds of grief, but you aren't willing to make the extra push to actually see if it's okay ?

I'm sorry to sound so terse, but I suspect that there are very few ob/gyn's writing back to us on Mamasource and if you are having concerns about your pregnancy, you NEED to talk to your doctor. Even over the phone. We can share our personal experiences, but you shouldn't rely on those experiences, use them to keep your hopes up, yes, but rely on intelligent and professional people who know more than we do.

Please, see or call a doctor. If the doc says to stay down through the rest of your pregnancy, remember, it's only 5 months. Out of how many years of your life? Do what it takes to have a healthy baby.

Hi A.,

I don't really have an answer for you, just advice. It is possible that it is just your period. I have heard of that happening. If it was me, I would want to get checked out to be sure what is going on. I would not want to risk the possible safety of my child. I hope all goes well for you and your baby.

I had bleeding and cramping with both of my pregnancies and have two healthy children. I bled sometimes regular, sometimes pinkish and sometimes brownish spotting. They told me I had something called polyps. Not sure if i spelled it right and they caused the bleeding they thought.

I too had subcorionic hemotomas when I was pregnant and bled a lot. If you are bleeding a lot (a pad's worth in an hour) would go to the ER where you are now and they will most likely do an ultrasound. If you are just bleeding a little, or it is mostly brown, I would call the OB, tell them you are bleeding, and ask for a recommendation. Every time I bled more than a few drops I had an ultrasound to make sure things were ok with the baby. I too experienced increases in bleeding, and I did everything I could to stay off my feet, though the literature does not point to any benefit to bed rest, I just wanted to do everything I could.

In the second trimester, placenta previa is still likely to resolve, but it bears close watching. I can't imagine this isn't stressing you out, so at least call your doctor. At 18 weeks you are most likely going to go to full-term, but you will feel better if you talk to your OB or see another doctor in the ER.

I bled each month for the first 3 months during all 3 of my pregnancies. It could be a hormonal cycle. Any bleeding or cramping should be checked out thoughh; especially if you have a low placenta. If you're away from home, you should go to an ER.

My last pregnancy I had something called a subcorionic hemotoma, which was a little blood pocket that formed when the egg was attaching, between the placenta and the uterine wall. I was put on bedrest while I was bleeding, but that was almost impossible with 2 other little ones at home. I bled on and off ranging for bright red to brown, and it seemed to get worse with activity. I had a pretty big bleed and then things got better, I believe that was the pocket draining out. I went on to have a healthy baby and a pretty uneventful pregnancy after that point. My problem was detected on ultrasound at 7 weeks. Please keep your doctor informed, despite feeling like you are bothering them, and insist on any thing you feel you need. You will be in my thoughts.

Hi A.,

I hope you are feeling better now. I know you are doing all you can to take care of yourself and your baby. I don't know why some pregnancies are so difficult. My daughter recently delivered her baby boy 10 weeks early. She had difficulty almost the whole way through her pregnancy, and like yours her doctors and midwives did not know what was causing it. The good news is that her little guy is doing very well now and hopefully they will be home in a few weeks. I don't tell you this to frighten you, but to let you know that even the difficult pregnancies can turn out well. It is amazing what they can do now to help these little ones! You will be in my thoughts and prayers, A.. Keep me posted.
Blessings,
K.

Maybe if it's not your "period" your body is still experiencing some hormonal cycles while you are pregnant. Could it be breakthrough bleeding? Ask your doctor again. I don't think it's anything to take lightly--not that you are. Is there more than O. doctor in your practice? I would try to find another doctor--I wouldn't trust a doctor who says "I don't know" concerning bleeding during a pregnancy! Best of luck and God Bless!

You would not have a period while pregnant. If it makes you feel any better, I had bleeding off and on with both of my boys and they are very healthy kids now. Old blood is brown and is less of a worry, new blood is bright red and is a little more concerning. I would see your doc as soon as you return home. Try to rest and do things (reading, tv) that take your mind off of things. My doc said to me once, that if a pregnancy is meant to be, it will be. If it isn't, there is not much you can do about it. This is out of your hands, so as hard as it may be, try to relax and let happen what will. I will say prayers for you!

Hello A.,
I had bleeding on and off for the first 18 wks of my pregnancy. I also had a low placenta....but even once they thought is moved I still had a bit of bleeding. Now...I never had cramping until later in the pregnancy (32-41wks). My aunt told me that she had her period all through out her pregnancy.
Hang in there. You are not alone...and best of luck.
Oh...my Dr. like yours did not know why it was happening...
