Period After Breastfeeding - Minneapolis,MN

I was wondering how long it typically takes for you to get your period after stopping breastfeeding? I am slightly anxious to know how my cycles are going to be after having a baby as we had a ton of difficulties getting pregnant the first time. We are considering starting to try to get pregnant again soon...but still no period and it has been about a month since I completely stopped breastfeeding. Any thoughts?

What can I do next?

Give it time. If you had an irregular period before, it should actually get on a better schedule for you now. Some women won't see a period for a few months after stopping due to the hormones still activating. I also suggest using an ovulation kit (much like a pregnancy test) to keep track. Good luck!

Hi H.,

I know that because every bodies body is different, I don't think there is really a right answer. But I do know that just because you aren't getting you're period, doesn't mean that you can't get pregnant. You are still ovulating. Just don't have the period. Good luck to you.

It was easily 4-6 months after I stopped breastfeeding before I got my period. However, my best friend is still nursing and she got her period 6 months ago, so obviously everyone is extremely different.

Good luck getting pregnant!

H.,

I got my period back weeks after giving birth even though I was exclusively breastfeeding round the clock. I have had friends, however, who didn't have a period until 2-3 months after they stopped breastfeeding altogether and they had only been giving feedings a few times a day for months. Every body is a little different.

For me, I slowly weened my daughter over three months and ovulated just around the time I stopped nursing. We became pregnant (without intending to) before I had my first period and I miscarried at about seven weeks. My doctor said my body had probably too many changes at once and couldn't support the pregnancy. Be sure to take care of yourself so can you can take care of your others. I wish you the best in your quest for a second child.

I've always been irregular too and we had a few challenges with our first child. Mine period came back about 2 months after I stopped BF -- but then the first two cycles were CRAZY heavy and long. So basically it took me a good 4 plus months to get back to "normal".

Best of luck.

I got mine about 6 weeks after I finished breastfeeding. Everyone is different though, so if you are concerned perhaps contact your dr.

i'm still nursing & my daughter is almost 14 months old - still no period although she only nurses a couple of times a day.

i just keep waiting... and i have this sneaking suspicion it'll happen at THE absolute worst time possible. :)

I nursed my son for about two and a half years. Unfortunately, I had a period, although it was irregular during those two years. It became more normal after several months of not nursing. However, everyone is different.

how old is your baby? I haven't quit but my period just returned and my son is 13 1/2 mos. it will take time for your body to adjust, I think it should be within 3-6 mos. which is quite variable I know!

Mine took several months to get. However if you are not using anything you could be pregnant.

In my opinion and with my experience after having 2 kids it really varies. I breastfed for almost 1 yr with my first and about 6 mos with my 2nd. I believe I got my period either in the 7th or 8th month after being pregnant after both kids. I have heard stories where some women never even got their period bt kids. That is why the OBs are pretty quick to encourage some form of a birth control after you give birth reminding you that even when you're nursing you can still get pregnant. I always think it's best to let your body get back into "normal" mode for a bit before getting pregnant again b/c it seems like it just makes for a healthier pregnancy but that is solely my opinion not really based on any medical research. Maybe this doesn't pertain to you, but I do know after having c-sections, it is best to allow your body some recup time. I had a friend that lost a baby after having a ruptured uterus and they thought it had some relation to her having her babies too close together (not enough healing time in between). Not to scare you at all . . . but I just wanted to share my thoughts on why I think it's a good idea to sometimes wait a bit between pregnancies since it can do a number on your body. I have no idea how old your baby is and quite honestly it's not place to tell you what to do. I have quite a gap between my kiddos but that was done on purpose and I haven't had any issues yet with fertility. I would definitely check with your OB/GYN for the best advice because really it comes down to your health, fertility, and age, I think. They will give you more research based facts rather than opinions. Best of luck to you!

Even though I nursed my babies for lengths ranging from 11-22 months, I still got my period a few weeks after having each baby. It is a myth that your period will stop while you are nursing exclusively, I am proof of that!

this is an almost impossible one to nail down, because everyone is different. mine came back when my son was 7 months old even though i was still breastfeeding. and my cycles were completely different then the were before i got pregnant with my son.

I nursed for 15 months. My daughter weaned herself literally over night when she had Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease. I had one period about one month later and then got pregnant.
