Every time my son's diapers leaked (out the top) I had to switch to larger diapers... You might want to try the larger first...
Good luck!
I have a 2 year old son that wears a size 5 diaper at night to go to bed. He wears underwear during the day. He has been peeing through his diaper and getting he pj's and bed wet for the past couple of weeks and wakes him up everytime. Prior, he would always sleep through the night until 8 or 8:30am. Does anybody have any ideas of how to prevent this from happening? I try to not have him drink much before bed, but sometimes it's a meltdown if he can't. Anyway, should I maybe go down a size or up a size in his diaper? I've tried the nighttime pullups a long time ago when he was first potty trained and the very first night with them, he was drenched.

The solution could be as simple as changing diaper brands. When I had my daughter, I found that Huggies leaked at night. I used Pampers normally, so I just kept buying Pampers. With my step-daughter, we buy Target brand diapers. When she started leaking out of size 5's, we bought her size 6's and fastened them tight.
Recently, I discovered the Huggies Little Movers, and I LOVE them. I just prefer to stick with what I know unless I have a coupon for the Huggies.
Also, to address the woman who said size 5 is large for a 2-year-old, my step daughter is 2 and weighs 32 lbs. Her 1-year-old sister is in size 4's. They have changed the weight ranges on diapers in recent years, so there is nothing wrong with a 2-year-old in a 5.
I'd first try to up the size, then I'd look into a brand switch. Good luck!!
have you tried the night time diapers? ( not night time pull ups, but night time diapers) they worked well when my son would leak through the regular diapers. Try that first; if that doesn't work, try going up a size.
Always go to the bathroom right before laying down for the night. J is 3 and we found him doing the same thing. He's too old not to notice if we put stuff in the diaper, like an overnight Kotex, wouldn't that be fun to explain.
Anyway, we switched to Huggies Overnight pullups and have never had an accident since. These pull ups have been so saurated that they were nearly clear and his bed wasn't wet. Of course he had to be changed right away when waking but his bed really stays dry.
You have gotten some great advice if you are looking for a temporary fix for containing his pee. If, however, you want a long term solution and want him to stop peeing at night so he can actually wear underwear and stay dry through the night and stop spending money on diapers, you need to deal with the meltdowns and not allow him to drink before bed. As with everything else involved in disciplining a toddler, you shouldn't be giving in to his whims just because you don't want him to have a meltdown over it.
I don't know how big your son is, but size 5 sounds big for a 2 year old - can you tell if the diaper is actually filling up or if it's just leaking? If it's leaking, I would definitely go down a size. Sorry, that's not great help, but that's all I can think of right now. Best of luck!
Huggies Overnights!! In a size bigger if you need to - works like a charm!
onestepahead.com has a training pant that will wake him up before he wets himself and stop giving liquids half hour before going to bed if that doesn't work then try an hour before bed until you find the trigger for you kid My son used to drink very little in the day but the hour before he would drink up and had the same problem of waking up. Our doc said it was good he was waking up that he didin't want to be dirty.

Try Pampers extra protection at night. My daughter is 22 months and she wears a size 3 during the day but I use a size 4 extra protecting at night and never have a problem.
I used to use little liners that went right into the diaper (they looked like a larger panty liner) and helped by absorbing extra pee, so they don't leak. I got them at babies r us, but I have not used them in 3-4 years, so hopefully they still carry them.
I just checked online, and they do - specifically says "for heavy wetters"

By the way, congrats of having a 2 year old BOY who wears underwear during the day, I don't know any boys who were trained that early!
We use Huggies Overnights. They work great! Just buy a size bigger than what he wears during the day and it should do the job.
My 16 month old has been wearing Pampers Nighttime diapers since I found them. He wears size 4 during the day and 5 at night. Very rarely does he soak through. Maybe try the size bigger. I would not go smaller unless he is soaking through on his legs. Good luck! Congrats on the daytime potty training!!
Who would have ever thought of using a knotex. Placing one inside the diaper at night, just might solve the peeing through the diaper issue. It is worth a try. My Granny, who has been passed now for years suggested this to my sister when her boys were doing the same thing. It worked!
I put one diaper right on top of another and this helped a lot from the time my son was 6 months all the way until he was potty trained recently. I understand how difficult it can be to restrict liquids at night, but after dinner if we have to let our son have a drink he gets just a small amount in his cup since he will drain whatever we put in. Your last resort would be to wake you both up in the middle of the night and take him to the bathroom until he learns to do it himself.
Try going up a size. Also, get him up once during the night (maybe before you go to bed) to empty his bladder. If he does pee during the night, it will be less.
I want to address what Forty and Fab said, I whole heartedly, respectfully, disagree. Just because a child is potty trained doesn't automatically mean that the brain/bladder connection is made for night time. You can't teach a child to wake up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. That is something that his body has to be ready for. Buy an overnight diaper and forget about it. When he wakes up dry a couple of mornings in a row try underwear and see what happens.
Good Luck! :)
I don't have an answer, but I just had to comment that I logged on this morning specifically to ask a question about wetting through overnite, and lo and behold, here this one was! Moms really can be on the same wavelength. Good luck finding answers (by the way, I've had good luck in the past with huggies overnites - but my son is now a size six and sometimes wetting through. But they've worked better than everything else by far).
We just had the same problem with this and our 28 month old....our best luck was with the huggies overnights. Pull ups and store brands were a joke. Store brands all leaked. Pampers extra absorbant kept it in the diaper but left the skin sopping wet....i had to coat her in diaper cream to avoid a rash. there are also diaper doublers (sold in pubix or babies r us) that you can put in the diaper (you will have to go up a diaper size for this). We had to go up a size for the night time diaper before my daughter actually reached the weight for the next size just becuase of the fit to her body type (she's got her Mommy's butt!). We also pee right before bed with no more liquids after dinner every night but since she sleeps 12 hrs there is no way she can developmentally hold it and she is not there yet to know to wake up. good luck!
my son is almost 4 (at the end of july) and he's been pottty trained since he was 2. he still wears a diaper at nite. when he starts to leak, i go up a size. that seems to fix the prob. i don't think the water b4 bed is an issue. i give it to my son and most mornings he's still dry. he's gone a month or more being dry in the morning, but then he'll go a week with a wet diaper. i buy one pack of diapers (size 6) and it lasts for a month or more. and i buy the cheap store brand since it's just at nite.
Try the nighttime pampers in size 5. They worked for me.
Try going up a size and definitely avoid beverages an hour before bed. It works for my 3 year old who also wears underwear during the day but diapers at night because she cannot yet control her bladder during those hours. We used to have the excessive peeing problem until I cut out the water and milk an hour before, and yes it was difficult to get her to understand that she could not have a drink before bed but we have finally gotten used to the new schedule. I let her drink to her little heart's content until 7:30 because 8:30 is bed time and she usually pees all that she drank by the time she is tucked in. Hope this helps, I know what it is like to have to change and bathe your child at 3 a.m., not fun for parent or child!
You probably want to size up and look into diapers made specifically for nighttime. Nighttime pull-ups are designed for kids that might have a minor accident at night.
You can't really expect a 2 year old to be night trained. It is perfectly normal for kids to be day trained and not be night trained until up to age 6.
Try nighttime diapers instead of pullups. I have to use these with my 18 month old and they are great.
I used the bed wetters that are for bigger kids for my daughter at night. LOL the top went to her nipples, but she stayed dried. I finally got her potty trained by 3.5 & I ended up having to get rid of pull up & having her go at bedtime 8pm, getting her back up 10pm, then again at 1:00am and then she would stay dry till 6-7am. after about 2 months she told me not to wake her that she would do it herself & she has been ever since. My son is a year younger than her & I figured while i was getting her up, i might as well get son up too & so I never had to buy pull ups for him. He was fully trained 2 months before his third birthday. Hope this helps.
I love the idea of using Kotex. That didn't occur to me when my little guy went through this at around 2 years of age as well. I did use the Diaper Doublers that you can get at Publix in the diaper aisle. They look like sanitary pads and just sit inside the diaper and absorb extra fluid. The nice thing also is that you can adjust how much of the pad goes in the front, the middle, etc by shifting it according to where your son seems to pee out of the diaper. We had problems with peeing out of the waistband, so I moved the pad more to the front area. Worked perfectly. I still use them sometimes in the car since sitting in the carseat for a longer period of time causes leaks for my son.
