I have a very active, completely fearless 18 month old son. I know that we're really overdue for his first trip to the emergency room. Before that crisis happens, I would like to become more informed on what my options are. I found Acute Kids Care and Cook Childrens Ped Urgent Care Center are in my area. Anyone have any experience with them? Or does anyone have anywhere else they would recommend?

What can I do next?

I vote for Acute Kids. I do pediatric phone triage and recommend them quite a bit.
You can get their hours and other info at http://www.acutekidscare.com/faq.cfm

If you do need an ER versus an acute care, I highly recommend Medical City; it was referred to me by a pediatric nurse. They have a special pediatric ER which is completely separate from the adult ER and they get you in and out fast! The waiting room is very clean and the staff is great with kids. My 3 1/2 year old is a little dare devil and also has asthma so it seems we never go long without some sort of crisis. He had his first staples in his head at 18 months (trying to jump his big wheel off the deck Evil Kenivel Style). We visited Medical City and they had us stapled and out of there in less than an hour. It was great. We have been back a couple times due to asthma and have had the same great treatment.

I'm with everyone else. Acute kids is a great place!! I've been there for both broken bones (they can do X-rays right there and you even get to take the pictures home so you can take them to your regular Dr for casting) and sick visits. The staff is really great and the Drs took the time to explain things. We were in and out in less then an hour for the broken bone and 30 min for the sick visit. They even call the next day or so to make sure everyhing is going ok. Also the visit only cost our co-pay for insurance. I spoke with my babies Dr and he would prefer us to go there (after his office closes)
Hope this helps...my little boy broke his arm at 18 months!!!!

Hello E.!

I took my 29 month old boy to acute kids when he got a virus that made him vomit for almost a week. The staff was great and the doctor was really good with him. They put him on IV's and had to collect his urine for further tests. The whole process was really stressing since my little boy wouldn't stop crying but their staff made me feel very confortable.
Besides we didn't have to wait to see the doctor. He was available right away. Not to mention that the place is very clean and well mantained.
I took him to the one located on Page, right by Hebron high school.

A few months ago i took him to the ER at Trinity Medical Center and totally hate it... We had to wait for almost an hour while my little boy was running 104F!!! Let alone the bill that was over U$500.00 and they only gave him Tylenol and Motrin!

Anyways, i highly recommend Acute Kids!

Good luck to you and your son.
F.
