I need some suggestions please! I'll be teaching a P.E. class during our homeschool co-op next term. I've planned a few different things such as obstacle courses, kids yoga, & kids kickboxing. The class lasts about 45 minutes once a week. I'm not sure of the exact ages (that depends on signup) but the range is pretty wide 3 - 8.
Thanks for your help!

There are many things you can do with the kids but unless you are a trained martial artist or have a black belt available to teach any for of martial arts ******* DO NOT INCLUDE MARTIAL ARTS IN YOUR PROGRAM*****.

I am not trying to flame you or offend you. I am a black belt. I have seen students in a martial arts class, who are not listening, throw a kick or punch and break their hand or foot. A huge part of martial arts training is to learn how to hold your foot or hand and what part to strike with when striking a target. If you are just a little bit off you can break the hand or foot. When a martial arts student becomes a black belt he/she takes responsibility for his/her students. If a student gets injured and it is the fault of the instructor, the instructor can lose his/her black belt and be banded from training for himself or ever teaching students again.

Depending on the age of the kids you can play kickball, volleyball, dance or about any sport taht does not need specialized training.

Most of all have fun.

Is it ALL age ranges, at the SAME time????
Because, that is too wide of a range... per age/development/coordination per age etc.

DO not do, yoga or martial arts. UNLESS you are, formally trained in it or certified and/or credentialed in it. Too much, liability.

Do you know, First Aide or are certified in it?

Also, per young kids, 45 minutes is a long time for PE.

First, I would not do kickboxing or dodge ball - way too many opportunities for someone to get hurt.

Running
softball/t-ball
jazzercise
jump rope
bike riding
nature hike

Ha! Our school system fired all the elementary school gym teachers, and had parents volunteer to teach PE...and I was one of them. I led class 1x per week for about an hour and I did struggle to come up with stuff. I did teach the kids to play flag football (got flags at Dicks sporting goods fairly inexpensive) and that took about 4 or 5 weeks...taught the positions and had little drills and culminated in full games at the end. We also had a basketball segment that was a few weeks, volleyball (which was kind of a disaster and they were not very coordinated). The favorite activity was dodge ball. If I was desperate for an idea, it would be dodge ball day (but I recommend foam balls). You may find this hilarious, but one day we did P90X (an hour of different exercises for each muscle group) and one day we did a yoga video. I also had a strength training segment where we learned what each major muscle is and learned 3 exercised to build strength in each major muscle. Good luck! I'm sure anything to let them burn off some energy will be fun...

Hi! Sounds like fun! I home schooled and am a retired school teacher, so maybe I can help.

PE is about getting physical! An obstacle course is a great idea - you can do it on any playground. Yoga is wonderful, 45 mins may be too long for the 3 year olds, but if you keep it moving along, they should be fine.

I would pass on kick boxing - just not safe. Unless you are a trained professional with the proper equipment, then go for it.

Other ideas I have used in the past:
* swimming is always a hit - and the lifeguards are there to support you.
* "training" for a triathlon - the kids loved this - running, biking and swimming. * We also made up other "triathlon" activities - we did skipping, jumping, hopping anything that was age appropriate. (3 year olds might not be riding bikes yet!!!) Each time we got together we would time the "events" and see if we improved on last time.
* any kind of "races" - rolling down hills, skipping, hopping, lunging. I would always line the kids up in "height" so that it was fair.
* dance - any kind of dance, any kind of music. Line dances are a hoot and any age can catch on

Most importantly stay safe and have fun!

I coach soccer and try to break the ice by letting the kids 'kick the coach' ( usually just at the beginning of the season). In the next session we play coaxes revenge. I also have some resistance parachutes (2) that I use and the kids find it fun-but it's a good way to get them to push themselves.
My kids favorite pe activity is when the teacher breaks out the scooters.
Mini olympics is fun too.

The kids at my children's school LOVE dodgeball and all its variations (spider ball is one). If there are enough kids, capture the flag might be an option too. For the individual activities, jump rope could be great too. Ditto to yoga and the obstacle course, aerobic/dancing to music too. Maybe riding bikes is an option at a local park or trail?

My son's PE teacher puts on popular music which really jazzes up the kids. My son LOVES PE! They do different dances, games, roller skating, jump rope, tag type games like "infection". They also do geo caching, hiking, and bicycling. I think any exercise class type things would be fun...add in great music and keep it positive.
