Yep, it's normal. Unless your child qualifies for a HeadStart program you have to pay for it.
We have a new early childhood center set to open in the fall. It is a public preschool for kids aged 3 and 4. I have been told that it will be $600 for full day and $340 a month for half day. Is that normal to pay for a public preschool? What are the benefits of public preschool over private? I believe most of the private schools/ daycares around here are the same cost if not cheaper.

We pay for public preschool
$225 for 4 days a week which has 2&1/2 hrs long class.
Ummm...here in NYC public schooling means FREE. If your child is enrolled in Public Pre-K here you do not have to pay anything at all except for supplies on the supply list the teacher sends home. Here in NYC that is the difference between Public and Private schooling.
We pay for public preschool- I think it is about $250/month for half day. We like it.
It's normal to pay if your state does not require preschool education and most don't is my understanding. We opted for public over private for the last year of PS so my daughter could start getting to know the kids she'd e in school with. I'm from a small town, so the same kids are together for all 9 years(k-8) then they move on to different HSs. I would suggest you visit a few schools they are all so different and see where you and your child fit! The cheapest may not be the best bet, but the Most expensive may not either!!
