Party Favors for 6 Year Old

My son's sixth birthday party is next Saturday, and I'm wracking my brain trying to come up with something cute and affordable to give the guests. We usually go with the small gift bags full of stickers, pencils, candy, tattoos, etc. But I get so tired of my kids bringing that stuff home, and I'm sure other parents do too. His theme is Scooby Doo, but if I could think of something great to give to the kids that's not themed at all, that would be fine. Part of the problem is that this is going to be a pretty big party (we have 28 kids coming, plus parents, as it stands right now) and I can't afford to spend a huge amount on each kiddo. I thought about trying to give them each a free sundae coupon for McDonald's, but the one McDonald's I called said they don't sell anything like that at this time of year. We went to a party last month where each guest received a sand pail and shovel, which was great, but I think every single one of those kids will be at this party as well, and I hate to give them the same favor. I checked the Dollar Tree today for toys that look like they're worth more than $1, but we really didn't find anything that seemed decent. Does anyone have any ideas? The guests will range from a few 2 year olds up to around age 8, with about 7 girls and 21 boys (if that helps you come up with ideas!). Thanks for any suggestions you can provide!

What about dollar crafts on sale at JoAnn's right now. They are called Camp Crafts. My daughter did a western party for a 7 year old about a week ago. She had face painting , they painted a star badge with markers and she put the peel and stick pin on the back so they could wear it or put it in their sack with their names on beforehand. Then she gave them a bandana to wear and an owie bag for the microwave or freezer. She made these with western flannel and put flax seed inside. Then they had a pinata full of candy and each child could put what candy they picked up off the ground into a snack baggie and seal it. That way there was enough for everyone.
The craft also gives them something to do at the party. Good Luck

For my son's party we went to 75 % Off Books in Plano and got everyone a book or two. They have so many books that are $0.99 or $1.49 each that it didn't break the bank and it wasn't the same little stuff that you always get. The store is at Spring Creek and 75 in the Garden Ridge Mall.

What about matchbox cars for the boys and lip gloss for the girls? You could even have the boys race their cars to make it part of the party. Who doesn't like cars? There should be some Scooby Doo cars around somewhere. Good Luck!

You could make a snack mix with the dog bone grahams, put in a fun chinease takeout box or something different.

A ball for each child

A coloring book

A bag of chocolate dipped pretzels w/sprinkles

large dog bone shaped frosted cookies tied in a pretty bag

customized bubble favors (look at marthastewart.com)

photo stickers of your child on a sucker (also marthastewart.com)

We went to a party where the kids received a water squirter as a gift. The kids loved them. They are at the dollar tree and cost $1, so when we had our party we bought some as prizes and the kids wanted them like gold. It looks like a long arrow, each one has 3 colors and you pull the end back to suck up the water and push it in to wet up your unsuspecting victim. They had them in the swim section.

Also I ordered the colorful drawstring bags and fabric pens from Oriental trading to draw on them and those were the goody bags at our party. I did that for both my 6 and 8 year olds party. It was a big hit. If you order now, you can probably get those with express delivery. I think they were $19.99 for a dozen. I also ordered the "slap bracelets" that you decorate $3.99 for 24 and they decorated those with the pens. We also made sand bracelets where they put the color sand that they wanted. The boys made Rangers (blue/red) bracelets. The girls used more colors.

Another gift would be flip flops for $1, the only thing would be the sizes, but you could have the kids pick a pair as they leave. Have fun.

One more great idea. We loved it. My 9 year old was invited to a party and the gift bags had small hersheys chocolate bars, 2 animal shaped erasers and a $5.00 gift card to McDonalds. They had also made bracelets/anklets with each kids name out of beads and attached them to each bag.

Have fun.

I found excellent ideas when I was searching for favors for my daughter's bday. I ended up getting bubbles and a balloon for each child. I picked out different color balloons and tied them onto the bubbles. The nice thing was most of the kids accidentally let go of their balloons before even leaving the party and they used the bubbles up during the party (no junk to go home with mom and dad). I spent about $1.50 - 2 per kiddo!

You can very cheaply burn a cd for all of the kids. We did this for my son's last birthday and it was a HUGE hit! Parents are always looking for fun music to listen to in their cars. Ours had hits like: Scooby Doo, Where are you?; Ghost Busters, Who you gonna Call?; songs from the Lion King, Shrek and our favorite Toy Story's You've gotta friend in me! I wrapped them individually in tissue paper and tied with a ribbon. I also made a copy for the birthday boy and played the music during his party.

I have been doing cookies for about 5 years now. I try to bake cookies that go along with the theme, but you don't have to. My son's 2nd birthday was Elmo and doing Elmo cookies was too much work, so I did the number 2. You could do the same. Iv'e done cookies on a stick and put them in a pot with floral foam so that it is a decoration and then handed them out as people leave, or I've done cookies just in a celephane (sp?) wrapper and again, had them on a try by the door and handed them out as everyone left. I usually do sugar cookies and decorate with icing. You could purchase them or make them yourself. I just think baked goods don't get wasted. You could also do cupcakes and get the cupcake holders for the kids to take home along the same lines. Good luck!

I went to a bday party last month that gave little plastic bug jars with the kids names on them and the kids got to put a couple of lady bugs into each one to take home and release. I thought it was such a cool idea and cheap. U could even make your own bug jar by using plastic cups and taping some saran wrap to the top. Good luck!

I don't know how much time you have, or how crafty you are, but my daughter went to a Madigascar themed party once where the favors were cookies that looked like the characters. They were just big shortbread cookies on lolipop sticks, but they were cute and every kid liked theirs. And the parents were happy not to have a bunch of whistles and superballs come home after the party. I bet they would be pretty inexpensive to make too! Good luck, S.

You could give them each a jar of Play-Doh and a cookie cutter. A box of 6 jars of Play-Doh is pretty cheap and you can buy a big package of Play-Doh cutters and take one for each child.
Another idea is to make cut-out cookies and decorate them, put them each in a clear plastic package and tie with a curly bow.
the other giveaway I have used a lot is to go to a popcorn shop (I use J.'s Popcorn in Southlake, but there's Poppin' Shop and other places too) and get their small multi-colored popcorn bags. They're only $1 each and the kids usually love them.
Good luck!

To keep with your theme, you could easily do a bag full of bone shaped cookies and tell them they're Scooby Snacks!

Do you have a baskin robbins or ben & jerry's or other icecream parlour nearby? I know BR does $2 gift certificates, and B&J does gift cards.

Not sure where you live, but there is a popcorn place in South Arlington (Popcorn Stop) that if you order 20 or more they have a mini popcorn bag that you can shoose what flavor or color of popcorn you want and they are $1.00 each. We did it for our son's and the kids loved them.

Or... you could go the socially conscious route. How about a dog-bone shaped note (on card stock) stating that a donation has been made in honor of the guests to the local pet shelter. There are plenty to choose from and let's face it. None of our kids really need another cookie or pencil or mini-slinky or any goody-bag at all. Depending on how your son views the idea of helping Scooby-Doo's friends, you could be setting a trend among your group. Just a thought.

Bubbles and or sidewalk chalk are things my family is always in need of. Cheap and we run through it fast. Check at Party City they ususally have a few good ideas. Also the $1 bins at Target are great to find ideas for party favors.

Definitely Hot Wheels for the boys and maybe Polly Pockets or something for the girls? Sorry, I'm a boy mom. We haven't had girls at our birthday parties since preschool. Hot wheels come in a 5 pack for about $2 and you can split them up so each child gets one or two.

I've been to a couple of parties where they gave a snack sized microwave popcorn, a small can of soda (Sprite or something simular) and a small candy. Both my boys 5 & 8 were thrilled with it!
