My daughter is having her 6th birthday in July. We are having a pool party at our house. I wanted to see if anyone has any inexpensive and unique ideas for goody bags. I'm tired of candy, stickers, little junk toys that no one needs. I will have boys and girls at the party. Most of them will be around 6 years old. Thanks so much.

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all of the wonderful and creative ideas for my daughter's 6 year old birthday party. I was able to get nice striped beach towels at Target when they were only $5.00! I rolled them up and wrapped them with nice ribbons. Everyone loved those favors. The kids also decorated visors. We had a beautiful day and all 25 kids had lots of fun in the pool!

T-shirts and permanent markers, or even tye-dye. You can buy boys undershirts in packs from Hanes that about under $1 per shirt. Or draw a bunch of balloons on each shirt for them to color in and around.

I always do something relating to the theme of the party, so for instance a pool party for 6 year olds I would give out water- squirters, with goggles and a pack of water baloons, wrap it with some cheap nice looking paper or something and everthing you can find is pretty cheap[99cents store]

Since it's a pool party, you want to keep to that theme. My niece recently had a beach themed Sweet 16 and they gave beach towels as favors. They had them rolled up nicely and had them tied with a bow and they looked so pretty. Or you could do a beach pail for each kid with some snacks from Costco in there and a trinket or two.

My son's birthday is also in July. We always give gift certificates to our local ice cream shop. It cost the same as filling a goody bag. We just write on the certificate "one small cone" instead of the dollar amount. The parents love it because they will actually use it where as goody bag stuff tends to get thrown out.

We just went to a party where the goody bag had foam pieces, a foam frame with magnets on the back and a tube of glitter glue. Each frame said "Thank you for making Gabby's party special". The craft idea worked well for 5 year olds

My son's recent superhero party was just cake and ice cream only - at a family fun center with bouncy house, tricycle track and climbing toys. I filled boxes with two kinds of snacks, a coupon for a return visit and a magnifying glass which we used to watch tiny animals grow from those little capsules when you add warm water. I also had a scavenger hunt (find something, red, orange, yellow, green, purple and something metal, wood, stone and other - all must fit in the sandwich size ziplock back I supplied) - if you find 7 you get a superhero surprise which was a cape. I made 15 capes for about $4 total.

I really like the idea of making the favor a project or craft - and I appreciate not getting pinata junk from other parties!

How about movie theatre certificates?? Or maybe a favorite arcade at the mall, movie/game rental at a local video store?
I know the kids are only 6, but you may be surprised at how much they might like these. They probably wont think much to see it on paper, but when they use them, hopefully they will appreciate them more.

hello! I just went to a 5 yr old bday party and they gave away bags with dollar store items: a flashlight, a beach mat, and costco packs of Oreos and chips. The kids were going bananas over the flashlights. You can just do flashlights and snacks or a beachmat and mini sunblock. All for really cheap. Have a wonderful party!

I think doing a party favor rather than a goody bag (I hated those junky toys and always threw them out) is a good idea. Once I did small gumball machines with gumballs. Once I gave all the kids a movie gift certificate.
Good luck

Hi!
Last year for the end of school goodie bag in school, the class Mom's bought each of the kids a BIG bouncing ball - they were also 6 - the end of first grade -
anyway, they LOVED them - and they would be used, not just thrown away.
So, instead of spending on junk, get one (it was at Target for about $2.49 a ball - or maybe your $1 store would have them.
Or a hula hoop each -
and do a pinata for the candy -
That would be perfect! :)
Have a nice time!

Get some picture frames either from a dollar store or from a craft store that the kids can decorate themselves. Then take a few group shots and print out the best one. Each kid gets to take home a personalized photo from the party.

For my son's 5th birthday we made CDs with his favorite songs and gave every child a copy in a colorful jewel case. For the rest of the year I heard from parents how much their kids loved that CD! And it hardly cost anything at all.

I was recently at The Christmas Tree Shop and they had cute little canvas bags that were about $1, I think. You could get one and put sunglasses or a beach ball or something like that in it. Look at good dollar stores too. You can probably find something there. You could also check www.orientaltrading.com They have some unique favors.

look on disneyoutlet.com Last year, I got sleeping bags for my daughter's party. They were $6 each!!! (I just looked on the site - they have the plush blankets again but they are $10 each. They have Camp Rock pillowcases for $2.99 each, though). The year before that, I got really soft, nice plush blankets on that same site. It's hit or miss as to what is there, but the sleeping bags were so much better than $6 of junk.
One other gift I got that all the girls STILL use (I see it when I go to their house) was an adorable heart shape hat box. I got it at amazing savings. Don't know if you have a store like that near you. They have all types of nicely decorated floral or striped boxes and then I put a few little goodies in there like princess lip gloss and necklaces. All the girls still have the cute heart boxes in their rooms to store stuff...

Depending on how many kids you have, you could get something nicer. For my twin's 2nd b-day party (a kiddy pool party), I got towels from LL Bean with each kids' name on it. Obviously that's more expensive, but there were only 5 kids. Maybe you could buy cheaper towels and see if your local tailor could embroider names...

We've been to two "book exchange" parties recently, and they are a big hit. Everyone brings a new, wrapped book to the party, and everyone goes home with a new book. Means birthday girl doesn't get a load of presents she may not need, and the guests go home with something worthwhile, not trinkets.

I also was fed up with junk filled bags from b-day parties. I bought $4 t-shirts from Walmart, and (yellow, blue, red) fabric paint. The kids put their hand prints on the shirt when they first come to the party so they will dry by the time they leave. I write each child's name below their handprint. Each child leaves with a new shirt with colorful handprints all over it. My 6-year old son did gray shirts with handprints last year. We bought light blue shirts and we are doing footprints this year. Good luck!

My nephew turned six recently and my sister-in-law had all of the kids make sun catchers at his birthday party. His was an ocean-themed party, so his friends were able to decorate sun catchers in the shapes of fish, sharks, octopus, and dolphins. They loved it, and were able to take it home with them at the end of the day! It was relatively inexpensive and loads of fun for the children (I thought it was pretty fun myself).

Hi J.,

My suggestion is that you go to Michaels crafts store and get one of those cool foam visors in different colors for each boys and girls and then get a plastic container of beach theme stickers for the girls and sports ones for the boys (They also make individual packets of stickers theme related as well-Iused this - a little more expensive but much better stickers) - They can personalize them any way they want with the stickers and that could be all or part of the gift. This provides a craft as well...there are several other beachy things that would work as well. Just did my daughters 7th B'Day on Sat - Hannah Montana Spa party at our house with 22 little ladies and I am still recovering. Good luck and have fun.

Oriental trading has some great, inexpensive party favors, especially with a pool theme, as does the Dollar Tree (and similar stores, I'm sure). Things like beach balls, sun glasses, those little plastic beach container things that you put over your neck, personal fans, pinwheels, etc.

My daughter is 8yo and we have done playdo almost every year. You could also do modeling clay, coloring books with small packs of crayons, or those "doodle"pads that have differnt pages and activities in them. My friends always thank me for NOT giving a ton of junk and the kids always enjoy the stuff they get. I do include 1 lollipop in every bag because kids expect candy but it is ONLY 1! A.

Hi, We just gave our daughter her 7th birthday party by the pool. I picked up flip flops at Michaels for $1.00 and the kids decorated them. However, due to sizes I also picked some up at the dollar store. They sell stick on decorations, glitter glue, blows, glow in the dark decorations at Michaels. The kids seemed to enjoy it and the mom's appreciated it plus I picked up water bottles at the dollar store.

Enjoy. Happy Birthday.

J., I don't know how many goodie bags or favors you will need but we have had several pool parties and I find beach towels when they are buy one get one free or 50% off has been a nice favor. By the time you buy the junk stuff you are right up there in price anyway. I also have given beach balls and sunscreen in a tote and one year I found cool beach picture frames and put a note in that a picture would be forwarded from the party and then took candid shots and sent them in the thank you cards. For a fun game, try water balloon toss across the pool and we did a dress and undress relay. Had player number 1 from each team open a beach bag and put on a floppy sun hat, sunglasses, large t-shrit and flippers, then he/she takes it off, puts it in the bag and swims across the pool (younger kids can do the width not the length) and then player 2 does the same thing and so on, it is hilarious and makes great photos :)
Enjoy your party

Hi J.,
Most Mothers feel the same way you do about those goodie bags, the cost is shameful for a bunch of junk. So be a trend starter! I suggest white T-shirts and let them create or draw on them. Or make their own party hats. AC Moore or Joann's Fabrics are great places to get ideas. Plus most of, if not all of that plastic junk stuff can be dangerous.
Good Luck

How about if you get plain beach bags and have them decorate them that will be and activity for the party and they can take thhem as a party favor. Or beach buckets with some summer goodies like bubbles, diving sticks, hand towels and you can personalized each one of the buckets. I did before and they are pretty good hit. Everyone loves them. I hope this could help.

How about beach towels? You can find them fairly inexpensively in stores or online. And it would be very appropriate for a pool party.

My daughter's party is tomorrow. She turned 6 today. We are giving all the kids a book and pack of fun flash cards. I figured since they are reading at this age, it would be good for them to have a new book to read. I found some really great ones at dollar tree! I'm also including play-dough with it. Its fun! Hope this helps!
