Part Time Preschool/daycare

I am looking for daycare/preschool/babysitter starting this summer for my (will be) 2 year old and 6 month old. I only need care Mondays and Fridays (although depending on what they have to offer, I might do up to 4 days per week). On the days they go, it would be only until about 3:00.

I only work 30 hours per week so that I can spend some time with them in the afternoons, but I don't want to pay for full time childcare if I won't be using it.

Am I living in fantasyland for thinking places like this exist without charging the same/similar rates as fulltime care?

What can I do next?

Do you have a friend who might do it with that kind fo flexibility? A few years ago I took care of a friends kids with that kind of schedule. It was $20/day per child, but as long as she gave me her schedule in advance then I was fine with the days off and her not paying for days they didn't come. If she cancelled on me last minute she still had to pay me though because I had them on my schedule and I had already scheduled my day around her kids coming. One downside because she won't be making much she will probably want to be paid in cash and you not to claim it on your taxes. If she is going to give and be flexible you will have to be flexible with understanding that too. Good luck!

If you need some more help in the locating flexible child care you could always use the child care resource and referral service for our region. They can search based on your criteria including zip code and part time care.

Here are a few things to think about. For most places it is cheaper to pay a full time rate, then a part time (drop in) rate. My daycare charged $50 a day for drop in but $130 a week for full time preschoolers. I now stay home and charge $130 a week for infants, $120 for toddlers and $100 for preschoolers full time. Part time is cost per day plus $10 the rounded to the next 10 to keep it easy for bookeeping, So for infants & toddlers it is $40 a day, Preschool is $30 a day. Most licenced and listed homes have so many spots that can be filled, every child counts as a spot, so places want full time kids, since part time kids count as full time to the state. A listed home like mine, has 3 spots other than related children, so it is more profitable to have full time kids, which is why the part time rates are more than the full time ones. Good luck. I do have all of my spots open at the moment, and I offer homeschooling during the school year.

My son goes to Merryhill Preschool in Keller but they have several locations. I love it! They offer 2,3 and 5 day weeks. They also offer half days.
