Does anyone else remember having VERY PAINFUL cramps during the menstrual cycle after a baby? I breastfed for 4 months and then stopped. I got my period soon after and it hurt, but my most recent one was SO bad! It hurt to go the bathroom! (sorry!) Also my c section hurt and my muscles. Is this normal? Does anyone relate?

What can I do next?

Hi C.,
Oh my gosh can I relate. I also had a c-section and was breast feeding for 6mos.. My cramps were so bad and the flow was so heavy, I thought I needed to go to the emergancy room. I never had painful cycles before my son was born. My son is now two and I hate to say it but my menstrual cycle didn't get any less painful or less heavy untill I started on the pill agian. I so suffered for 13 months.

On the other hand the good news is as far as the c-section muscle pain got way better afer 4mos., you are on the up swing with that. So I would say everything you are going through is normal.

hello my name is D. and I am a mother of 4. Well they had a segment on Oprah once about that and they recommended starting to take something like Midol a day or two before your period starts that is if you get it regularly and know when its coming. Also they suggested using a warm pack or compress for your belly. But first I would check with your doctor to make sure that everything looks good and there's nothing else medically wrong. I hope I've helped a little. Good Luck!

Hi, C.! Following my c-section I found a lot of things regarding my stomach area painful, including my first and subsequent periods! The period cramps have gotten better, but I still have a lot of abdominal pain when I have a full bladder or gas or anything that puts pressure on that area of my stomach. I've been told it takes up to a year to heal all the layers that they cut through for a c-section. My son is 11-months old and it still hurts so hang in there! I don't have any useful advice on how to make it feel better but I wanted you to know that you're not alone!

I had the same problem severe pain and excessive bleeding, prolonged periods. I had a tubal after I had my 2nd. I don`t know if that`s what caused mine. I dealt with it for a year and then my OBGYN did a procedure on me called Novasure. I haven`t gotten a period or any bleeding other than spotting maybe once a year for over 3 years now. I do get occassional cramps 1-2 times year, but nothing in comparison toi what I got after I had my son and before the Novasure. I had it done at age 28. You may want to check it out. I think it can only be done if you are sure you do not want any more children, like i said I had a tubal done before I had the Novasure. But it sure cured me. I love it!!!! No more periods:)

C.,
I feel your pain! Literally! Before my son was born my cycles were never painful. I Could workout, swim... my days were normal.
Now, I am very crampy and achey for the first three days. I can generally relieve the pain with a heating pad...a good nap helps too. As for the C-section pain, I remember it being tender, but no pain. It still itches at times and my son is 4 and half.
Oh the joys of motherhood. Hang in there. If the pain continues to be bad, I would suffest talking to your OB and make sure you do not have an infection....do not be afraid to ask for tests. Also, the Dr has a stronger dose of MORTIN that he/she can give you for painful periods.

I didn't breast feed - but get killer periods. The heating pad is great, baths, good, meds if you can - but you have a new baby and are on the go --- try those new Thera something or other.... get the ones for the back that strap/stick on... they stay warm for 8 hours and you can move about no problem - you are not plugged in. My sister and I use those now and they work great - just make sure not to stick it on your C-section area - that might not be too comfy.

Is it during your period?? If its not it could be mid cycle pain. I started experiencing this severe cramping after the birth of my first daughter. I actually feel myself ovulating and it almost feels like contractions!!!!!!

C.,
I fully understand where you are coming from. I breastfed my daughter for almost 5 months and the period I got after was HORRIBLE!!! I thought I was going through the same senario like after I delivered. I talked to my doctor and she said it was normal because my body is still going through some changes after birth. I know it's rough but try to stick it out. It gets better. Try taking a warm bath or using a heating pad. If you take meds, try tylenol or midol. I only use meds if its necessary, that time it was and helped very much. Good luck!!

I was just wondering the same thing myself. My son is 6 months and my daughter is 2. I had C-sections with both and I am still nursing my son. I have just gotten my second period since he was born and have noticed that both times have been different than my pre-baby periods. I'm much crampier and actually feel like I did at the beginning of both pregnancies. I'm just glad to know I'm not the only one. I've been attributing the stomach muscle pain to the fact I just started doing a Pilates video but I also think my period is involved. I took some ibuprofen one night and it did seem to help. Hopefully it will help you too. Good luck.
