Pain Relief - Castle Rock,CO

As I mentioned in a previous question, I have had carpal tunnel since I hit my 3rd trimester of my first pregnancy. I am currently 32 weeks. I thought it was getting better, but today has begun to get worse again. It is only in my left arm and hand thankfully and I am right handed. But I never realized how much I need and rely on my left hand til this. The pain goes from my thumb and index finger where it feels like needles stabbing my fingernails and then a radiating nerve and inflammatory type pain travels through my hand, wrist, and all the way up my arm into my shoulder. I've been using a wrist/arm brace, ice packs, tylenol, and Biofreeze, but it does not let up as a result. It will subside on ocassion, but seems to come back at the worst times. I am a nanny, so I am not typing all day in an office, but it has interfered with my duties with the kids and around the house. Is there anything else anyone can suggest? I would die for some Advil, but I know I cannot take it right now. Would massage or chiropractic treatment help?

What can I do next?

Wrist rotations. 10 clockwise 10 anti clockwise. Tight fist and rotate your wrists.

I discovered it by accident in warms ups for Tae Kwon Do, but later read in Prevention magizine that physical therapists and doctors recommend it.

They work by strengthening the muscles in the wrist and taking the pressure off the nerve. I could never wear the brace all night. It itched and I would wake up in the morning to find it on the floor or next to me on the bed. It also helps to put your hand and lower arm on a pillow in bed at night.
Though heat makes it feel better it can make inflammation worse. Ice helps but sometimes hurts.

Heat packs helped me

I had a bit of a mystery diagnosis going on with my wrist last year. My cow crushed it between herself and metal pole and after the pain didn't subside for a couple of months I went into the doctor. X-rays, MRI, and an EMG showed that there was absolutely nothing wrong with my wrist... But I still couldn't use it. It was my left wrist and I am right handed. I was a cashier at the time but again was using my right hand for 80% of the work. Still, without my left hand I was useless! After 7 months, 5 specialists, and various forms of treatment (Rest it, use, heat it, ice it, brace, no brace, chiropractor, physical therapy, etc) my SAVIOR finally found the problem. This specialist looked at the same test results that the first doctor performed and every following doctor looked at, and found the problem. I had a ganglion cyst right in the middle of my wrist ("Funny" thing is, I had asked about the possibility of it being a cyst to every specialist I had seen because all of the symptoms matched according to my own research and all of the specialists said that it could absolutely not be a cyst). He said that it was pretty small and they usually don't consider surgery for cysts so small, but I had been in so much pain for so long that after lots of begging he agreed to do the surgery. After the surgery he told me that the cyst was actually 3 TIMES LARGER than what it appeared on the MRI and that's why it was causing me so much pain.

Anyways, out of the treatments I listed here are my experiences:

Rest it - Helped the pain die down to a dull
Use it - Made the pain worse
Heat it - Helped
Ice it - I'm not sure if this helped or not because I truly hate all things cold and couldn't stand an ice pack for longer than 5 minutes at a time and even that was forced upon me by my husband
Brace it - Helped but made my muscles very weak
No Brace - Kept my muscles stronger but hurt
Chiropractor - Felt amazing immediately afterwards but actually caused my problem to worsen in the long wrong, still not sure what he did
Physical Therapy - Hurt like a b*tch (It was seriously a sick game titled 'Let's see what can make V. cry the fastest' - And I'm not a crier) but the exercises they taught me helped a bunch after surgery to regain my muscles! (I had physical therapy BEFORE surgery but continued to do the exercises AFTER surgery)

I can't take pain meds either. Anything stronger than Tylenol and I'm throwing up for an entire day. Luck me, right?

A massage might help too! :)

I had the same thing when I was pregnant with my oldest. Nothing helped. Pain relievers, brace, ice/hot, exercises. Nothing. I did not try chiropractic care though. If I were you I'd give that a try. It's pretty inexpensive.

Have you seen a doctor who has diagnosed carpal tunnel? I had similar pain and it turned out to not be carpal tunnel. If I remember correctly, I was prescribed a muscle relaxant. Don't know if you can take that when pregnant.

With my carpal tunnel, my doctor did a half-cast of my arm and I had to wear it at night (put on with an ace bandage). That helped a lot. It put my arm and wrist (particularly) in a position that helped alleviate the pain. I also got a cortisone shot that helped immensely.

Good luck!
