Pain in First/second Trimester?

Hi there,

I'm almost 14 weeks pregnant with our second child. Since the very beginning of the pregnancy (even before I realized I was pregnant, I thought it was PMS!), I've had these sharp pains on either side of my lower belly, I think kind of where my ovaries are. They feel like ovulation or PMS cramps. Has anyone else had these during pregnancy?

It's not a tightening of the uterus, like a contraction (though, I had a c-section before ever going into labor last time, so I don't really know what a contraction is!), but it is this stabbing pain when I stand up too quickly, roll over in bed, cough, etc. I've asked my OBGYN, who is a man, and he didn't seem to get what I was saying or to be concerned about it.

I've had no spotting and everything seems fine from the ultrasounds and first trimester screening tests. This is my second pregnancy and my bell is HUGE already at 13/14 weeks, so maybe it's just the quick stretching of the uterus or ligaments or something? Just wondering if anyone else has had this pain because it has me a little worried.

Thank you,

H.

YES! I had it... my (male) Dr told me it was my uterus "stretching". It did not feel like "stretching"... it hurt like hell! and it was much worse with my second daughter (i don't remember it with the first).
But whatever it was, i made it through the pregnancy and have a healthy almost 4 year old!!!

Just to chime in, I totally agree. I had cramping and ligament pain during both pregnancies. It was scary at first. At one point in my 2nd pregnancy I had a terrible cough and sometimes my ligament pain was awful! You are probably fine. But if you don't feel your OB is really listening to you or acknowledging your concerns, find another one!

Tell your doctor. If your obgyn doesn't listen to you, try again or get another obgyn who will listen.

I too would guess ligaments...though im not experienced as some. This is my first pregnancy, and when my belly began to bulge out a little i would feel horrendous pain whenever I laughed or strained it in any way. I do believe its just stretching out, mine went away very quickly though, maybe a few days or a week....

Hi!

It's called "round ligament" pain. Getting up or moving in certain directions too quickly can easily cause it. I had such a hard time with it...

Good luck!

I've had that exact same thing with all five of my pregnancies. I'm at the end of my 5th pregnancy and I still have that. Now it's so bad I can't stand up sometimes. I mentioned it to my OB and she said it's my ligaments. Everything has always been fine with me although it's a pain to deal with, literally. Good luck and congratulations!

My guess is ligament and fascial stretching, especially since you had a c-section there is probably a fair amount of soft tissue binding / scarring that is being stretched right now. I would get some unscented massage oil (or massage oil especially made for pregnant mamas) and do some gentle, yummy belly massage or get a pregnancy massage and ask them to do some gentle work on your belly. During my current pregnancy with twins, I have been massaging my belly a lot :)

Based on your statement about your OB, personally, I would consider finding one who understands me better and could address these kinds of issues with more compassion. Just a thought...
