Oven Cleaning

Last night my husband had the idea to use the "cleaning" option on the oven; well, needless to say, it filled the house with smoke and even now, the morning after, the place smells as if a chemical fire had taken place. I need suggestions for cleaning my oven which was trashed on Thanksgiving. I am sensitive to harsh chemicals so I am weary about oven cleaners however, perhaps there is one on the market that dissipates quickly that I am not aware of. Please help, thanks! :)

What can I do next?

I am with the rest here! I dont have any kind of harsh chemical in my home. I shop at a online wellness store called Melaleuca. I get all my cleaners cheaper AND they are safe to have around my kiddos. They have one cleaner in particular that I love on my oven. You may still have a smokey thing going on because all that food is burning off, but you wont have the horrible chemical fumes and such that are doing Lord knows what to your family. Feel free to call me if you want to know more...and in the mean time be thankful for the cool weather and leave your windows open!!!!

I personally don't own a single chemical cleaner. I don't believe we need chemicals to make things clean. I got rid of all that we had after our first was born. To clean my oven, I sprinkle baking soda down then add water and vinegar. It will bubble. Let it soak overnight and it should wipe clean in the morning with maybe a little elbow grease on the really bad spots.

A great book for learning how to clean without chemicals is "Better Basics for the Home" by Annie Berthold-Bond. Check it out at your local library.

Hi H.,

My name is J., the other NPR junkie and I read your post, I have a solution to your cleaning problem. I am also sensitive to harsh chemicals and have two young children. About a year and a half ago, I found a company that makes and manufactures their own line of environmentally safe cleaning products that work BETTER than the products that contain harsh and harmful chemicals. Even better, I can order these products online or over the telephone and they are delivered to my door...no more lugging laundry detergent, etc. home from the store.

I would be happy to give you additional information about this company and their products. Please feel free to call me at ###-###-#### or email me at ____@____.com

Hope to hear from you soon!

Hello! I recently cleaned my "self cleaning ovens" with Easy Off Fume free Max with Lemon scent just two days ago and found it to be very successful. Now, no Turkey day disasters but mine was just from spillage from baking chicken, etc. I found it to work very well and it can work over night or with in two hours. I just used gloves but didn't notice a "painful" type smell at all. Just be sure to rinse very well. Worked on the "wires" that hold the food while baking.

I really liked it and I hope that this helps you. Just look for the blue spray can. I found mine at wal mart.

Hope this helps!!

Regards,

T.
