Our First Cold!

Help! First time mom with our first cold! Even though I am a medical provider - this is new territory for me! I am sure it is viral, so i just called the pedi for some suggestions. His primary symptom is cough, mild nasal congestion. She told me to get pediacare cough and cold. The only problem with that is it has the same ingredient as "sudafed". I know if I take sudafed I cant sleep for days! I dont want to do this to my child, as it is uncomfortable, and I know he needs his sleep. She also told me to get vicks vapor rub, does this go on the chest or under the nose? LASTLY (sorry!) She said to get nasal saline. I got "little noses" but my nanny freaked out and said this would be too frightening for him.
Also he has a hard time sleeping flat (coughing) but does not sleep soundly when I put him in his swing. I would elevate the head of the bed, but he would end up at the bottom!
Thanks for the help!

What can I do next?

Honestly, everything the doctor told you is right. You'll find the infant Pedia-care won't have the same effect on the baby as adult Sudefed does for you. And it really depends on whether or not he's stuffy or has a runny nose. I assume he's stuffy since you purchased the "Little Noses". All of the parents, whose children I've cared for, have had good luck with "Little Noses". It's just to put moisture in the nose...a cool mist vaporizor will help, if you prefer not to use the nasal drops. Vicks has a new rub for children, too. It's not quite so over-powering. You can put it on his chest so that the vapors will soon penetrate his nose...or you can put a little under the nose. Either way is fine.

Now, I understand about the swing and the problem with raising his bed on one end. I use the bouncer for any infants I have who are having trouble with congestion. It's slanted just enough that they can sleep and breathe, too. It's handy, too, because when I'm trying to feed another infant or doing bookwork, I can place my feet on either side of the bouncer frame and rock the baby to soothe him/her, and put them to sleep.

It takes time. Just listen for wheezing and check for fever. Either of those needs to be checked by a physician with one so little. Or if there is redness around either ear or pulling or slapping at the ear. Possible infection or too much fluid. Also, if he gets to where he cries and turns loose of the nipple during feeding. That is sometimes a sign of infection. It hurts for them to suck.

Don't hesitate to change the decongestant if you feel this one isn't working after several days. Anything over the counter for infants can be used. Moms sometimes have to try different ones to find what works for their child. Pedia-Care is the first one reccomended by most doctors.

Good luck, Mom, and God bless..

Your poor thing! I know exactly how you feel. My baby girl had her first cold at 5 months also. I did exactly what your pedi said with the pediacare and the nasal saline(same brand) This really helped her to breath much easier, which was frightening my baby more than the saline did. Of course your little one will probably cry when you do this(as mine did)She just did not like me messing with her face in general. For this age you should drop them in,not squeeze. I also put her in the shower with me to get the benefit of the steam(did not actually put her under the water itself...just held her in the corner of the shower by sitting on the shower bench).Got this from the Dr.Sears Book. It worked very well.

She slept much like your little guy....but in her carseat so that she was upright..this helped a great deal with breathing.

Best of luck to you both! I know the first one is tough. My little one is now 11 months and has had two colds..and I know they are definetly no fun!!!

To avoid possible lengthy colds, like in our family, I would consider doing research on www.glycoscience.org for natural substances, called glyconutrients, that are safe to put in food or any liquids for all ages. Dr. Reg McDaniel, located at the Fisher's Institute in Grand Prairie, has seen phenomenal results with increased health in babies as well as older children, because they respond quicker than adults.
Hope this helps :) If you would like more information, please email me at ____@____.com

Whne my daughter had her first cold (she was three months), my pedi told me not to give her any medicine, only use the saline drops and suggested using a humidifier. These seemed to work fine.

S.,

We live with my two 5 year old nephews so my daughter has gotten her share of colds already. Her doctor said to use the little noses and the pediacare. Honestly, when she gets a cold all she wants to do is sleep and none of the medicine keeps her from doing so. She absolutely hates the little noses and suction so I hate to do it. The last 2 times she has had a cold I haven't done the suction very much and she got an ear infection. So please learn from my mistake and keep up using the spray and suction.

Little Noses saline spray is great! My son has allergies and I use year round. Because I have been using it since he was an infant he is okay with it now. He is 11 months old. My sister in law has the same reaction to Sudafed where she stays up but I don't. I don't remember it affecting my son when I gave it to him maybe because when they are that sick they will sleep. Vapor Rub should be used on his chest. I might have put a little under the nose at one time but it's really too much for them to inhale and could irrate his skin. I use the children's vicks with rosemary it seems to be more gentle than regualr vicks. Also have you tried the plug in vicks if you don't have a vaporizer. I use the plug in and I have both. It's great, it helps them sleep and breath while controling their cough.

The "Little Noses" saline drops work very well. I could tell an almost instant improvement with my daughter (who got her first cold at 4 months) however, she HATED the process of putting the drops in the nose. I have discussed it with a lot of other moms and they all say the same thing. It works and it is worth it. My pedi did say not to "spray" the drops but to actually drop drops into the nose. This way you know how much you are giving - I guess with a spray, there is not as much control. My doctor also recommended Tryaminic...which did seem to treat the symptoms. However, she was very hesitant to offer the Tryaminic, wanting to try the nose drops and suction first. It did not seem to keep my daughter up at all. The doctor did warn it was a possibility though. I am a first time mom as well, and everyone keeps telling me that she will have colds for the first two years of her life...which just seems WRONG! I hate it. And, unfortunately, this weekend it seems to have started again. Good Luck!
