I wonder if anyone have ideas for making ornaments. We have a three year old. Last year we made reindeer ornaments out of construction paper. Hands for antlers, foot for face and added a red puffy small ball and made eyes with marker. Would love ideas and can save them for current and future christmases.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the ideas. Love them all. I just got the reindeer clothespins and googly eyes stuff, and also wooden ornaments from craft stores to paint and glitter. We will make it soon. Other ideas, will do for future christmases. And will keep an eye out on cards where have angels and all the works and put photos on it.

Thank you so much. What a great community in mamasource.com

Hi J.,

I have not tried this but I was looking at activities to do at the Lakeshore learning store and it had a candy cane ornament so I thought maybe you might want to consider this. I know you said your child is 3, and the age they suggest for this is 4, but with your help maybe it is still doable. It seems simple enough :)

good luck and have fun!

Celebrate the season…with decorative candy canes that kids create themselves!

pre-k-2nd grade / 4-7 years

You will need:

Directions:
1. Roll-out a chunk of white non hardening modeling clay into the shape of a candy cane.
2. Roll a chunk of red non hardening modeling clay into a thin rope.
3. Wrap the white non hardening clay around the red shaped candy cane.
4. Embellish with silver glitter.
5. Insert a pipe stem at the top.

snow globes are a lot of fun. You can create or buy little figurines from the craft store. Then you get small jars with lids (babyfood size is perfect, or whatever fits over the figurines you have) glue the figurine to the lid. Fill the jar with water, add a few drops of food coloring (optional) and glitterthen screw the lid on tightly. Make sure that you leave a little space in the jar so when you put thelid on it doesnt overflow. Good luck! Also, stop by your craft store, they always have a ton of stuff out for ideas. You can google christma crafts as well.

My mom has always done these and we still love to look at them, year after year: She saves all the holiday cards with Santa, angels, reindeer, snowmen, the manger scene, etc., and replaces their faces with faces of the children in the family. Then she puts a clear finish over them (shelac or decoupage) and decorates them with glitter. They're pretty funny.

You can also do letter cutouts that you cut or get at a curriculum store. String them together to spell names or holiday words (Noel, Peace, Joy), paint and decorate with glitter It's a good language activity, as well. You can put an elegant twist on this one, by using silver or gold glitter on the words and stringing them over a piece of vintage sheet music (sprayed with shelac), leaving enough tying ribbons on each side to drape across furniture, trees, doorways, walls, etc.

You can buy clay at an art store (the kind that bakes or air-dries to harden) and roll it out an inch thick. Then use cookie cutters to make shapes-- trees, stars, etc. Leave a hole so a string or hook may be attached. Follow the instructions on the clay (better yet, ask the art store employees), and bake or allow to air dry. Then paint and glitter to your hearts galore!

You can also make the clay yourself very simply. Search online for "making clay ornaments"-- there are tons of easy recipes (it's basically salt, flour and water).

Do you have a digital camera? If you do, take funny face pictures with your three year old and go to Micheal's Craft Store. There is these funny stickers you could add to the pictures like funny sunglasses or big lips or something else like a hat, all sorts of things. That will be so much fun and there will be lots of laughs. You'll see.
